Description

Nov. 24 1925- G. E. BARTOL, JR, ET AL SHIPPINGAND DISPLAY CARTON Filed March 13, 1924 lY/T/VESS:
Application filed March l3,
To (W vi /mm runny concern lie it known that we, Gnoizon l lliirron, Jin, and LEWIS l ."rli'lEl-i, citizens of the United States, residing at lfhilede ohia, county of lf hiladelphia, and State of sylvania, and at lilerchantyille, county of thimden, State (it hew t have invented. a new and useful .nprovement in Elhipping and Display Cartons, ol. which the following: is a tall, clear, and exact description, retereime heingr had to the accompanying drawin s, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improveili form of container or carton.
.he object of our invention is to provide a container or carton which will be "adaptable for use as a container for articles snch steel pens in transportation and at the same time for use in displaying of the articles for sale.
ll'l ore particuiarly, it the object of our invention to provide a container or carton which will e adaptabletor the display of various styles of small articles, as various styles of pen points, and in which the ral styles of the article concealed, as in envelopes, will be separately contained and disarsoeiated. :trom one another, while at the same time on the opening); of the container for the display of the goods there will he posil'ioileil in association with each of the several styles a sample or specimen of such style from which selection may he made.
ii. .lurther ohject ojii' our invention is to preside a crmtainer so constructed as to permit oil the ready and secure ])(:Fill01illlf, in association with the several styles oilf the goods, of the element thereof supporting) l'h samples (it the several styles for the (lisp thereo'ii and at the same time i means whereby the i-samples oi: the several les will be protected and. pi'ei'eulrd Tron Terinp: with the closing. ol' the winter ransportation or its opening: on a :l'or play.
A. further object of our invention is to provide a container or carton which. will be simple and economical in inamitictnre and eilioient and durable for the purposes of transportation and display.
Having now indicated, in a general way, the nature, purpose and advantage of our invention, we will proceed to a detailed de- ASSZGNORS TU C. HOVI'ABD HUNT E331? CUT/I- Serial No. 698,840.
scription of a preferred embodiment thereof. witl'i reference to the accompanyingr draw in which- Fir. 1 is a perspective view or a (xintniirr or carton, embodying our invention, slown in position for display.
2 is a cros -sectional view on line 2 lligure 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the lirst step in closing the carton. V
l ig. 41- is a cross-sectional view showing the second step in closing the carton.
l ig. is a cross-sectional view showing the carton in. closed position for transporta tion.
Fin. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the carton partially closed, as in Fig.
The carton comprises a body portion (6 comprising front and hack walls; a bottom, and end walls, the body being prefe'ahly relatively long and narrow.
Integral with the upper edge of the back all and forming an extension thereof is a cover member 7) adapted to be folded along the line of the upper edge of the back wall to extend over the top of the carton and. serve as a closure therefor. Integral with the cover member 7) is a flap member 0, extended along its edn'e to form a second flap member (Z. llitting within the body of the carton are a plurality of separate containers 0, or, if desired, the body may be divided into a plurality of separate compartments by means of partitions.
The containers 6 are adapted to hold a plurality of packages of, for example, steel pens adapted to be sold for a given price, th 1 steel pens in the several containers being: respectively of a dillerent style.
(in the upper side of the llap member 1: are secured specimens or samples 7" of the several styles oil steel pens in the several coin tainers a, each sample respectiiely liieiini; positioned so that it will, when the carton arranged for display, lie adjacent to, or in association with, the container in which are pens similar in style to that of the sample.
Referring now to Fig. l, in which the carton is illustrated in display position, it will he noted. that the flap member 0, upon which are secured samples of various styles o1 pens, .is retained in upright position with the several samples respectively associated with the containers 0, by means of the flap (I, which is inserted behind the containers 0. Thus, there is displayed to purchasers a plurality of samples of different styles of pens from which a choice suited to the taste of the individual may be made, and in ii'mnediate association with such samples respectively there are provided containers for convenient packages of the several ditferent styles of pens to supply the purchasers demand. As a result, the dealer's stock of pens may be displayed and sold in sealed packages without the necessity for wrapping after purchase and without risk of spilling: or mixing of the pens due to handling by customers to enable selection.
It now the carton is to be closed for transportation or storage, the flap d is withdrawn from behind the containers 6 and folded up over the ends of the sample pens on the llap o, as shown in Figs. t and 6 The flap 0 is then inserted between the containers and the front wall of the body of the carton and the cover member Z) brought over the top of the carton, as shown in Fig". Thus, it will be noted that the flap ineinbe' (3 serves not only to secure the lap c in display position, but also serves as a prot ction for the samples and as an assistance in in sertine flap 0 between the container and the front wall of the carton when the carton closed.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is:
1. A shipping and disp ay carton havi a bottom, side and end walls, a cover hing 'l to one of said walls, a flap formed by an tension of the cover, a, specimen of the ar- 4 ticles to be contained in said (*arton supported by said flap, and a second tinp connected to the first flap, arranged to be pr iioned to hold the first flap in display po sition or to be folded over the end of the ll5 article to protect it when the t inserted within the box.
2. A shipping and display carton llilfllwj a bottom, side and end walls, a cover l g to one of said walls, a plurality of woman ments in the carton adapted to contain a Dlinalitj. of artic es for sale d illerino' l each other, at up formed bv ot the co ver, a plurality of laps are bciin:
articles to b eontainet ments respectively supportc sa d second flap termed by an e*;
first mentioned flap adiptcd, when the (.1 ton is open, to engage behird said com tainers and position said ,)Ctii1i1t;is
tively in association with the compartments containing sin'iilar articles and when said carton is closed to overlie said samples t: protect them when the tleps are being: 1 sorted between a wall of the coi'itainer and the adjacent walls ot the compan cuts.
In testimony ot which invention we have hereunto set our hands, at Camden, N. 1., on
this tenth day of March, 1924.
GEORGE E. BARTGL, Jn. LEWIS A. HAWKES.
