Description
i @uiten tetra @sind @ffice JAMES s. BODLE,l Vor MECKLENBURG, -NE'W YORK.
Letters Patent No. 62,596, dated Mm?. 5, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENT FOR MARKING ANIMALS.
TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. BODLE, oiMecklenburg, in the county of Schuyler, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement lin Stamps for Marking Sheep, Cattle,`Bags, dto.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of' theA same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an end elevation; and
Figure 3 is a bottom view.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an adjustable brand or stamp to which diferent letters may be attached for the purpose of branding or printing, l-which is effected by the following arrangement of parts.
The frame is composed of two parts A and Al. Their lower outside edges are made with an acute angle formed by bevelling the bottoms and sides. At the top they have projecting from their inner and opposed faces lugs and A3. The lug A2 is formed with horizontal and parallel faces. The lug A3 has its upper face hori 'rental and its lower face inclined at an obtuse angle to the inner face of the side piece A1. B is the handle, :attached to a stein, I3, which has a thread cut upon it, workinginto corresponding'female-threaded screws cut in holcs'through the lugs A2 and A3. When the screw is turned so as to bring these lugs together, the upper edge of the point oi the lug A2, resting against the base ofthe lug A, the pointl of the latter will be drawn-down and the lower edge of the sides be thereby forced asnnder. When the screw is relaxed they will approach one another. Metallic letters, C, are formed having notches bcvelled on their upper faces inclined to correspond with the acute angle made by the edges of the side A and A, and at such distance from one another, that by relaxing the screw El, the sides A and Avwill fall within the ends of the notches in the letters; but when the screw is tightened the edges of the sides will be forced into the notches in the letters, thus securely fixing them in place, as shown by the black and red lines in fig. 2. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Il. A stamp or brand formed with an adjustable frame and movable letters, combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner set forth. v
2. The combination of the frame A A1, with lugs A2 and A3, threaded stem B3, and notched m'ovable letters C, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. BODLE.
