Bookcase. i
SPECIFICATION forming para of :Letters Patent No. 625,103, dated May 16, 189e.
Be it known that I, WALLACE SUMNERl l GRANGE, a citizen of the United .`States, Vresiding at Malta, in the county of DeKalb andv do declare the following to beafull, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art lto which' it appertains to make and use the same, refings,` and tothe Afigures of reference` marked thereon, which formfarpart ofthis specification.
`My invention relates to bookcases; and it has for its object to provide a simple and eliicientconstruction of bookcase having a series of separable box-like compartments adapted to rest` one on top' offthe other with the open side of` each compartment to the 1 front of the case,` the lower side of each compartment when in position constituting the shelf for the support of the books and theseveral compartments when separated constitnting boxes for the shipment or transporV tation of the books, thus obviating the necessity of removing the books from thecase when their' shi pmen tor transportation is necessary.:
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists inthe construction and the combination 'of parts hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be specifically defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming l a part hereof, and in whichyFigure lis a perspective of'a bookcase constructed according to my invention, the top and one side being separated from the other partsfor clearness ofA illustration. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through a bookcase,
and Fig. 3 is a sectional viewthrough a portion of the top and one side to show clearly the groove or recess for receiving the ends of the side members.
In the drawings the numeral l designates.
a series of box-like compartments placed one on -toprof the other, so as to constitute a series of shelves for supportingthe books. VTo thefront edge of one of the *horizontal side voi' each compartmentj-l-.fer'finstanc Q as.
Applieationiled January 6, 18.98. Seriallo. 665,823. (No modeld vot' the compartment next below, so as to close the joint and conceal the same from view, thus giving the appearance of a series of per `1nanentl5'secured shelves. These anges also. `prevent onecompartment from sliding back 4of thev front edge of the next compartment in Contact therewith.
The numeral 3 designates thesides ofithe bookcase, which are separablefrom thebox likecompartments and which extend at `the top above the upper horizon-tal side of the top compartment andl at thebottom below the lower horizontalside of the-bottom comr-4 partment, so as toconstitute tongues, which will enter grooves f or recesses lformed atjthe ends ofthetop orcover to the bookcase and 1 l also to the bottom or base of the fbookcase, l
respectively'. I
'.The top or cover of the bookcase isdes'ig1-` nated by the numeral 4, and itis provided at its front with aange or molding'l 5 to extend' v down overl the top of the uppermost compartment, so as to conceal the front edge thereof and form an ornamental finish.` Itis provided at opposite ends with yprojecting and depending plates 6, which preferably are made of metal and of any ornamental configuration or design and color. T-hese plates form grooves l or recesses 7 at opposite ends of the top or cover, so as to receive vthe tongues on upper ends of the sides 3, and they serve to hold together the topand sides and 'to assist in se.- curing the box-like compartments 'between the sides.
The base of the bookcase is designated by the numeral 8,;which is formed at its front edge with an ornamental molding' 9. It is provided at its, opposite ends with the outwardly and upwardly extending metallic plates 10,l which form grooves l1 at opposite ends of the base, so as to receive the tongues or lower ends of the side members 3, and thus serve to assist in holding the base and side members together, as well as'to secure the vbox-like compartments in place..
" The front ,edges of the side members'S are providedwith strips or' moldings 12, which hen Iesiies are'in placewi-ll fit over the .35 Q closed ends, back and open front and place'd front edges of the end members of the several finish, and also to'assist in lookin g or securing box-like compartments,
andthus conceal the meeting edges'between the same and furnish -an ornamental inish, recesses 13 being lformed ends of each of,`
above the upper'and lower the stri-ps or meldings'12, seas to receive the molding tothe top or cover andv the molding to thebas'e, and fthusv form lan ornamental the parts together at such points.
Under the construction describedl a very simple and etlicient form of bookcase .is provided in which the several parts can be readilyy taken apart and placed in position when desired without the employment ot' nails or screws to hold .the several parts together. When the bookcaseis to be transported, vthe vmembers are readily separated' one from the other, and each'compartment will continue to retain the books placed therein,"so that they can'be shipped without removal from. "the several compartments, thus very greatly vreducing. .the labor 'attending the moving or shipment of the case and its contents and without-injury or damage to the books. v I have'illustra'ted and described with par-v tic-ularity the preferred details of construc- -forth its merits, what I claim v l.
