LOUIS B. PRAHAR, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
BAG-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,863, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed March 16, 1899. Serial No. 709,301. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that 1, Louis B. PRAHAR, of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kin gs and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bag- Frame, of which the foll-owin g is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in bag-frames, and especially to the frames. of chatelaine-bags. The object of the invention is to so construct the frame that an ornament of any desired design can be quickly and conveniently applied thereto and to so secure a bag to the frame that only a single inlay is needed. m
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a frame to which an open-work ornament may be secured in a manner to clearly define the openings therein and so that the material of the bag will appear at the openings in the ornament, adding materially to its appearance.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the frame that should the members of said frame be accidentally sprung apart while locked the members will yield considerably and yet not open sufficiently to allow even a small article to drop from the bag.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indi-- cate correspondin g parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper portion of a chatelaine-bag and the improved frame applied to said bag. Fig. 2 is an inner face of the ornament for the frame, the latch beingomitted. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the body of the frame. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the front member of the body of the frame, the ornament attached to said body, and that portion of the bag attached to said front member, the latch being shown in side elevation, the section being taken practically on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a slightly-modified form of front member of the body of the frame; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the said modified form of front member of the frame, the front ornament, and a portion ofthe bag.
I'Ieretofore in the construction of frames for chatelaine-bags it has been necessary to make new dies and construct a new frame for each design of ornament, and said ornaments when made in open-work lose much of the desired effect, since such ornaments are laid directly upon fiat metal surfaces. I aim by my improved construction of frame to fully bring out all the features of the design used as a front ornament and to provide a frame that may be termed a stock-frame, sincefront ornaments of various designs can be quickly and conveniently attached to said stock-frames.
The body of the frame consists of a front memberA and a back member B, the two members being pivotally connected at their ends in the usual manner, and the front member A is adapted to close upon the back member B. The back member B is provided with a forwardly-extending marginal flange 10, and the rings 11, adaptedto receive a chain, are connected with said back member, and the back member B of the frame is provided with the usual inlay 12. The front member A is provided also with a forwardly-extending marginal flange 13. Therefore theplain or body portion of the member A is presented to the inlay, and when the members of the frame are closed the flange of the front member will lie-beneath the flange of the back member. An inlay is not needed for the front member A of the frame, since the body portion of said member corresponds to the inlay ordinarily employed, and the front face of the said front member consists of an ornamental plate 0, which plate is given a shape approximating the shape of the front memor ornament G, as shown in Fig. 2. These guide pins or spurs are employed in order that apertures 16, produced in the front plate or ornament C, may be brought in proper registry with corresponding apertures 17 made in the body portion of the front member A of the frame.
Since the front plate or ornament 0 extends above the flange 13 of the front member of the frame, a latch 18, preferably of a spring type, may be secured to the back central surface of the plate or ornament, and the head 19 of this latch is made to pass downward through an opening in the flange 13 and through an opening 20 in the body of said front member to a point beyond its inner face, so that thelatch-head may engage with a suitable keeper provided on the back member 13 of the frame. The upper edge of the material of which the bag is made is made to enter the space between the front plate or ornament 0 and the body of the front member of the frame, and rivets 21 are passed through.
the openings 16 and 17 in the front plate and body portion of the front member, the rivets passing likewise through the material of the bag, as shown in Fig. 4. In this manner the rivets that connect the two sections of the front member of the frame likewise serve to hold the material of the bag in proper relation to the said member. The material of the bag is likewise secured in the customary way between the inlay 12 and the back member B.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a slight modification in the construction of the front member A of the frame, in which it will be observed that but a single strip 22 is employed, having its edges facing to the front and to the rear, and at the front edge of said member guide spurs or pins 23 are located, adapted to enter the recesses 15 in the front plate or ornament O, which front plate or ornament may be of the same character or of the same design as that illustrated in connection with the frame shown in Fig. 3;. but when the form of front member illustrated in Fig. 5 is employed an inlay D is also used, as shown in Fig. 6, and this inlay consists of a body-plate 24 and an upper marginal forwardly-extending flange 25, the flange of the inlay D extending over the body portion of said front member of the frame.
It will be observed that the members of the frame when locked together may spring apart a considerable distance without disclosing an opening of sufficient width to permit even a small article to escape, since the flanges 13 and 10 may be made quite deep and one passes over the otherwhen the members of the frame are closed, the forward edge of the flange of the back member engaging with the rear face of the front plate or ornament O of the front member, and the flange 25 in the modified form of the front member of the frame corresponds to the flange 13 in the form of member illustrated in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a frame for a bag, the combination with a member of the frame, of an outer'plate attached to said member and adapted to extend beyond the upper portion of said member, the said outer plate being so attached to the member of the frame as to leave a space to receive the edge of the material of which the bag is made, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a bag-frame, the combination, with the front member of the frame, of a back piece and a flange projecting from the back piece, and a plate which may be an ornament, arranged for attachment to saidflange, for the purpose specified.
3. In a bag-frame, afront member provided at its front edge with outwardly-extending guide-spurs and a front plate which may be an ornament having recesses in its back face adapted to receive the guide-spurs, the said .front plate being provided with apertures for the purpose set forth.
4. In a bag-frame, afront member for said frame, comprising a body-plate, a forwardlyeXtending flange, a front plate adapted for engagement with the flange, which front plate may be of an ornamental character, and means for securing the front plate to the bodyplate of the member, for the purpose specifled.
5. The combination, with the front member of a bag-frame,of an ornamental plate adapted for attachment to the front edge of the said front member, and means for forminga pocket between said front member and said front plate, for the purpose described.
6. In a bag-frame, the combination, with a back member, consisting of a body-plate and a forwardly-extending flange, of a front member pivotally attached to the back member and adapted to close therein, the front member consisting of a body and a forwardly-extending flange, and means for attaching an ornament to the flange of the said front member, for the purpose described.
7. A bag-frame comprisinga back member having a body-plate and a forwardly-extending flange, a front member pivotally attached to the back member and adapted to close therein, an ornamental plate adapted for attachment to the front edge of said front member and extending beyond the upper portion thereof, a space or pocket being formed at the rear of'the ornamental plate and a latch secured to the back surface of the ornamental plate at the upper portion thereof, for the purpose specified.
