Be it known that I, HEINRICH lVENZ,.of the city of New York, borough of Bronx, in the county of New York and State of New York, have. invented a new and Improved Pipe- Cleaning Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an attachment for pipes, intended to enable the interior thereof to be readily accessible for cleaning.
My invention comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part. of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an exterior view of a section of pipe, showing my device attached thereto, a portion of the cover-plate being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a section of pipe with my device attached, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
It often happens that the pipes in houses which carry away waste water becom e clogged, and great difficulty is experienced in cleaning them by reason of the inability to get at the interior of the pipes.
The object of myinventionis to supply an attachment for pipes of this character which will make it possible to quickly get at the interior of the pipes and thoroughly clean them out. IVith this object the device is applied to pipes at the point where they are liable to become clogged. I
The device consists of a frame 0, which is secured to the pipe A by being soldered thereto or in any other suitable manner. This frame has a central opening which corresponds in size and location with an opening B in the side of the pipe. This opening is preferably made much longer than its width, extending lengthwise the pipe. The frame 0 is provided with screw-holes F, as herein shown, one of these being placed at each end of the opening. In making a device of this character to be applied to large pipes or where the pressure is great'a larger number of screwholes will be provided.
Secured to the outside of the frame 0 is a cover-plate E, adapted to entirely cover the hole and to have a margin about the edge.
Between the cover-plate E and the frame 0 t is placed a sheet of packing material D, which is of rubber, leather, or any suitable material. This cover-plate is secured to the frame 'F by means of screws orbolt-s F, which pass the process of manufacture or by the work-v men when applying it to the pipe. By'this means it is possible to obtain access to-the interior of the pipe by removing the two screws F and the cover-plate held thereby. This gives anopening of suitable size in the pipe, and such as will permit the insertion of Wires or other tools for cleaning out the pipes.
This device may be attached to the pipes at all places where they are liable to become clogged. Their use will render it unnecessary in many instances to call in the expensive services of a plumber when the pipes have become clogged. They may be removed and replaced by any person.
This device is intended particularly for use in connection with lead pipe where, by reason of the soft and yielding material of which the pipe is composed, it is very liable to become deformed about the edges of the opening by the tool used for cleaningit out. The previous attachment of the frame 0, which would be made of brass,'iron, or some metal of greater strength than lead, stiffens and supports the edges of the openings and prevents deformation. By reason of the softness of lead it would be impossible to securely fasten the plate E directly to the pipe by screws. The described construction prevents clogging of the pipe by the insertion plate secured to the frame by screws, subsecured to the frame by screws, and a gasket stantially as described. or layer of packing material between the two,
