W. C. HALL.
TRACE HOOK.
rApplication filed Feb: 21, 1899.)
(No Modem if STATES Irn WILLIAM CLAIBORNE I-IALL, OF CAYCE, KENTUCKY.
TRACE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,647, dated May 9, 1899.
Application iiled February Z1. 1899. Serial No. '706 ,341. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLAIBonNE HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cayce, in the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Hooks; and I do declare the following` to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel improvements in trace-hooks, and more particularly to that class in which the draft of the animal ou the trace or tug is taken up by a spring; and the object is to improve and simplify the construction andV increase the convenience, efficiency, and durability of the device.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as will be hereinafter morefully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. y
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved trace-hook. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
l denotes an approximately cylindrical box or casing secured to the shaft by the clips 3 3. This casing is formed with integral end walls 4 4, between which is formed alongitudinal pocket, the bottom of which is provided with a longitudinal V-shaped groove 5. This pocket is provided with a removable cover 6, which is held in place by the clips 3 3. forward end wall 4 is formed with an oriice to receive the rod 7, the forward end of which The but which will not interfere with its longitu= dinal movement. in the casing.
12 denotes a spiral spring encompassing the rod 7 between the fixed wall 4 andthe collar 9, the tension of the spring being taken up vby the animal, and thus preventing any jar preciated and understood by those familiar with a one-horse vehicle.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but minor changes in the details might be made within the skill of a goodv mechanic Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A lspring-draft trace-hook comprising a casing consisting of a box l, provided with integral end walls 4 forming a longitudinal pocket, the bottom of which isprovided with a lon gitudinal groove 5, and a removable cover 6 which entirely closes the pocket and is held in place by clips 3 3, the forward end wall of4 said box being provided with an aperture; in combination with the longitudinal spring-ac tuated rod provided with-the trace-hook, the collar adjustably secured to the rear end of ksaid rod by a set-screw provided with a toe which projects into said groove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. WILLIAM cLAIBoRNn HALL.
