CLARA M. SOUTHWORTH, OF BRIDGEPO RT, CONNECTICUT.
ooRs ET.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 624,394, dated May 2, 1899. Application filed January 30, 1899. Serial No. 703,929. (No model.)
To all whom/ it may concern:
'Be it known that I, CLARA M. SOUTHWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to certain new and usefulimprovements in corsets, and hasfor its object to greatly simplify the construction of the corset and to aid materially in preserving the shape of those portions of the corset formed by the insertion of gore-pieces.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan showing the pattern of my improved corset, the gores and body portion of the corset being illustrated separately; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of half of a corset constructed in accordance with my improvement.
Similar numbers of reference denote lik parts in both figures of the drawings.
Prior to my invention gores have been inserted in various ways within the body portion of a corset, and the body portion itself has been made of various shapes and patterns, all looking toward the giving and preserving of the proper shape; but my present improvement reduces the simplicity of a corset construction to a minimum, aims to reinforce the corset and to render it flexible at the proper portions, and will be best understood from the following description.
1 is the body portion of half a corset, made of a single piece and cut away at the top, as shown at 2 3, and at the bottom, as shown at 4 5, so as to leave V shaped points 6 7 projecting from the middle portion of the body 1 upwardly toward the upper edge of the corset, while points 8 9 project downwardly from the middle portion of the body 1 toward the lower edge of the corset that is to say, W- shaped pieces are cutout of the corset-body, so as to leave V-shaped points projecting in opposite directions from the middle portion of the body 1, respectively, toward the upper and lower edges of such body.
stitched within the body 1, respectively, at the points where such body is cut away at 2 and 3, and the V-shaped points 6 7 are stitchedto these gores 1O 11, so that said points overlap these gores. 12 13 are gores which are inserted and stitched within the body 1, respectively, at the points where such body is cut away at 4 5, and the V-shaped points 8 9 are stitched to these gores 12 13, so that such points overlap these gores. The inner edges of these gores 1O 11 and 12 13 are .stitched to the body 1 of the corset at or near the middle portion thereof, and the gores 1O 11 constitute and form the under-arm and bust secti0ns,'while the gores 12 13 constitute and form the hip and abdominal sections of the corsets.
t will be clearly understood that the V- shaped points 'afiord a very delicate degree of flexibility at the point where the latter is most desired,- and, furthermore, that a corset constructed in this manner is not only ex ceedingly simple, but possesses all the features aimed at in the general construction of corsets. Of course it will be clear that the side walls of the cut-away portions 2 3 and 4 5 may be more or less inclined toward each other in each instance, according to the shape of the gore to be inserted, this of course depending upon the desired fullness and conformation of the sections 10 11 12 13.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2 In a corset, the body portion having W- shaped pieces cut out therefrom at the upper and lower edges whereby V-shaped points project in opposite directions and respectively toward the upper and lower edges of said body, and the gores inserted within said cut-away portions with said points overlapping said gores, the latter being then stitched to said points and body, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARA M. SOUTHWORTH.
