TO A LL WHOM IT MAY QONCERN': v
Be it known that I, JUDSON W. SHv/,pf Concord, in the county of Merrimack, State of New Hampshire,
have invented a new and improved MopHead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had'lto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters-ot' reference endorsed thereon; of which drawings- Figure 1 is a transverse section.
Figure 2 is a side elevation; and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section. A
In said drawings, a represents the mop-handle, which is inserted in a metallic socket, e. At the lower end of the .socket c,'which receives said-handle, and at right angles thereto, is a socket or elasp,f, through which passes a bearer,c, of wood; The mop-cloth g is held in its place by. the wire spring or yoke It, which encompasses the same, passing round the end of the-bearing strip c, and the ends of said yoke or spring passing up along thc handle, and passing into a-slot in the handle, in which is the ratchet strip d, of brass or other meta-l, and is confined in its place by slipping downover it the clasp b, which securely contines and astens it. The said clasp 6, being removed from said spring or yoke by slipping'the same up along the handle, the said yoke can he turned laterally from the position in which it appears in the drawings; and the mop-cloths being then inserted, the said yoke orspringh is replaced and pressed up until thc said cloths are firmly compressed between said yoke or spring L and the bearing stripe; and said spring or yoke is held in .its place, and prevented from slipping hack, and thus loosening said clothsby the'ends thereof` at m, springing into the notches indicated on the metallic ratchet strip d;.thus said spring or yoke being adjustable according to the quantity of cloth used in the mop. The cla-sp1: then being replaced, as indicated in the drawings, the whole is held firmly in place, and the lateral motion of said spring or yoke t prevented. The' said spring or yoke z. is prevented from moving laterally, except in one direction, by the notches at inthe end of the bearing strip c, upon which said spring or yoke rests when the instrument is adjusted for use. The clasp b is provided with lips or projections at o to facilitate the moving of the samenp and down'snid handle.
I am aware of the mop-head described inPatent No. 58,703, granted to 'Ruei-W. Whitney and AbnerC. Stockiu, and, therefore, do notcla-im such. The yoke thereto corresponding to the yoke and spring h, in my in vcntion, passes through the handle at aixed point, and .is notradjustable to the thickness and quantity of the mopcloths And the bearing strip therein is fastened'to the handle by a. screw, which is liable to rust out; whereas,
the handle and bearing strips in my invention rest in sockets of galvanized iron. And in s aid Whitney and Stockins invention the hearing strip is not provided with the shoulders which are provided in my invention; nor is the clasp, which holds the yoke in place, provided with the lips which form a part thereof in my invention, bothl which provisions greatly facilitate the use of said respectiveparts of my mop-head. In my invention the metallic portions are all of galvanized iron, witlrthe exception of the ratchet strip d.
The rack-bar d, in combination with the mop, constructed with the Abearer yoke and collar, as and for the purpose described and set forth.
