Description

J W. WILKIE.
Axle.
No '63,347. Patented Mar. 26, 1867.
@uitrit faire @anni @fitte JMES W. IVILKIE, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK Letters Patent IVO. 63,347, dated M'arclt 26, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXIS-TREES.
llge dgchnle ninna it it vlgrst tihrs ntrnt mit mating putt .of tige snm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Beit known that I, J. W. WILKIE, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Axle-Trees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full7 clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hail to the annexed drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l represents n longitudinal view of the axle.
Figure 2, a. sectional view of the same; and
v Figure 3, an end view of the box, showingith'e/ manner in which I propose securing the Washer.
The nature of my invention consist-sinV the several important features which will be hereafter fully set forth and described.
A represents the axle, which is constructed without a collar at the inner end of the arm, as seen in figs. 1 and 2. On the under side of the arm a receptacle is provided` for the oil or lubricating substance, as clearly seen in fig. 2. The outer end oi' the arm has two shoulders turned on it, one of saicl shoulders resting against a corresponding shoulder in the box B, also shown in iig. Q, the other shoulder being merely designed as a stoppage to the nut, to prevent it from binding the box. It will be observed from fig. 3 that a circular groove is mode in the end of box B, in which a leather washer is inserted, which should come out fully to the end of said box. A washer shoulrl also be placed against the shoulder on the arm, as seen in fig. 2.
The advantages of my improvement are as follows: iirst, the axle is stronger; having no collar at theinner end of the arm, it is less liable to break at that point where axles are more liable to break; second, the construction of the outer entl of the axle and box, and the placing of the oil chamber on the under side of the axle, the oil is less liable te run out; third, the leather washers are both so placed in the box as to exclude dirt; fourth, there being no coll-.tr at the inner end with which dirt can come in Contact, there is less friction; fth, it requires no'forging, consequently is cheaper, can be more easily nie-ruled, and set without a collar.
Having thus fully describedl my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Constructing the axle without a. collar, and providing it on the under sido ofthe arm with an oil chamber, as and Jfor the purpose set forth. I l
2. The combination of the axle and box, when both are constructed as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I hereby uiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
l JAS. W. WILKIE.
