To all whom t may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR DREscHnR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Portable Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable electric lamps; and the objects of the invention are to provide means for protecting the incandescent bulb from breakage while in use,means for suspendingthe bulb,and means for conveniently handling the bulb without abrasion of the conducting-wires and consequent destruction of the insulation.
The invention consists of a portable electric lamp comprising a flexible handle provided with a bore for the conducting-wires, said handle being composed of a socket portion, a handle portion, and a tapering end portion, a lamp-socket in said socket portion, an incandescent electric lamp in said socket, a collar extending around the socket portion of the handle, and a lamp-guard attached to said collar, and, further, in the special construction of the flexible handle and its connection with the lamp -socket and guardframe, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointedout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of a cask of large size, showing my improved portable electric lamp suspended therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved lamp. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 4 is a bottom View on line 4 4D, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the handle of my improved portable electric lamp. The handle is preferably made of soft rubber, so as to secure flexibility, and is composed of a socket portion, a handle portion vbelow the same, and a tapering end portion, all made in one integral piece. The handleA is provided in the handle portion and end portion with a bore for the conducting-wires, and the end portion tapers from the handle portion down to the conducting-wires, as shown in Fig. 2. Into the upper or socket end of the handle A is inserted a porcelain 1am psocket C, into which is screwed the bottom plug of an electric incandescent lamp D. One of the conducting-wires is connected to an exposed metal plug at the bottom of the lamp and the other wire is connected to the metal side lining of the socket, so as to form the electrical connections in the manner common in lampsockets when the lamp vis screwed in. The upper surface of the lamp-socket is not exposed, but covered by a contracted portion of the socket portion of the handle, extending above the lamp-socket, as at a, Fig. 3, to such an extent as to hug the neck of the bulb. Upon the upper end of the handle, at that portion opposite the lamp-socket, is placed a tightly-fitting collar E, which is provided at its upper end with a flange e, having a raised rim c'. The flange is provided with, preferably, three key-shaped holes e2, which are adapted to receive the headed ends of three correspondingly-arranged screws of the lampguard F. The lamp-guard F consists of the lower ring f', in which the screws f are located and which is preferably of a size to iit within the raised rim c', an upper ring f2, a block f3 at the apex of the guard, and a number of curved guard-wiresfl, attached at their lower ends to the lower ring, passing through ends in the block f3. At its upper end, above the collar, the handle is provided with a bead a to prevent by any possibility the slipping of the collar from the handle at that end of thesam e. A curved suspension-hook G is attached at its lower end to the block f3.
VThe collar, lamp-guard, and suspensionliook are preferably made of aluminium to secure lightness.
To attach the guard, the screws f are partly unscrewed and their heads inserted through the keyholes e2. The guard is then bodily turned so that the screw-Shanks enter the narrow portions of the keyholes. The screws are then tightened, holding the guard firmly in place on the collar. To remove the guard, the operation is reversed.
The tapering rubber handle protects the insulation of the cond ucting-wires from abrasion -and destruction by the hand when in use, which would otherwise occur in handling the lamp, and it affords a larger and much more convenient grip for the hand. The arthe upper ring, and secured at their uppe'r IOO rangement of the tight-fitting collar opposite the socket secures a minimum thickness of soft rubber diametrically of the handle, and a degree of rigidity not otherwise obtainable is thereby secured for the lamp-guard and bulb. Water or other liquid is eifectually prevented from reaching the lamp-socket by reason of the close contact of the contracted portion of the handle with the bulb.
My improved portable electric lamp is adapted for use in all situations partly or entirely inaccessible to exterior light and is`of special use, for example, in inspecting or cleaning the interior of casks in breweries and boilers in boiler-Works and other manufacturing establishments, tbc.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A portable electric lamp, consisting of a flexible handle provided with a bore for the conducting-wires,said handle being composed of a socket portion, a handle portion, and a tapering end portion, a lamp-socket in said socket portion, an incandescent electric lamp in said socket, a collar extending around the socket portion of the handle, and a lampguard attached to said collar, substantially as set forth.
2. A portable electric lamp, consisting of a flexible handle provided with a bore for the conducting-wires,said handle being composed of a socket portion, a contracted portion at the upper end of said socket portion, a handle portion, and a tapering end portion, a lamp-socket in said socket portion, an incandescent electric lamp in said socket, a collar extending around the socket portion of the handle, and a lamp-guard attached to said collar, substantially as set forth.
3. A iiexible handle for portable electric lamps, consisting of a socket portion at one end, a handle portion below the same, and a tapering end portion, said handle being provided With a bore for the conducting-wires and being made in one integral piece of elastic material, substantially as set forth.
4. A flexible handle for portable electric lamps, consisting of a socket portion at one end, a contracted portion at the upper endpf said socket portion, a handle portion below the same, and a tapering end portion, said handle being provided with a bore for the conducting-wires and being made in one integral piece of elastic material, substantially as set forth.
