IJNTTED STATES PATENT @FFIQE.
LUDVIG STEFANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF T\VO- FIFTHS TO CARL STEFANY, OF PENCOYD, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR EXHIBITING SAMPLES, 84,6.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,636, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed August 23,1898. Serial No. 689,299. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: over the leaves, thus preventing rising of the Be itknown that LLUDWIG STEFANY,a sublatter. In order to hold the leaves in proper ject of the Emperorof Austria-I-Iungary, (havposition when open, so as to inspect the obing resided in the United'States one year last jects thereon, the inner face of the lid is pro- 5 past and having declared my intention of bevided with the leg 11, which in order to be coming a citizen thereof.) residingin thecity folded is hinged to said lid. When said lid and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennis open, said leg assumes an upright position, sylvania, have inventedanew and useful Imowing to the pressure of the spring J, and provementin Devices forExhibiting Sam ples, thus forms a standard on which the open [0 Patterns, Pictures, &c., which improvement leaves are rested, as shown in Fig. 2. hen is fully set forth in the following specification the lid is closed, the leg is folded against the and accompanying drawings. same and rests flat on the upper leaf.
Myinvention consistsofadevice for exhibit- The follower is provided on its sides with ing samples, patterns, pictures, &c., embodyears K, which are freely fitted on the rods I, 15 ing leaves that may be successively opened on the inner sides of the box, so as to guide and means for alternately releasing and holdsaid follower in its rising and falling motions, ing the leaves, the construction of the parts and said box has also on said sides the pins being hereinafterdescribed andthe novel fea- M, which are so disposed as to have the foltures thereof pointed out in the claims that lower when at its proper highest point abut 7o 20 follow the specification. against said pins as stops, and thus prevent Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of an the displacement of the follower from the box. exhibiting device embodying my invention, Connected with the follower at the end opthe same being in open condition and showposite to the hinges of the leaves are the ing part of the lid. Fig. 2 represents a versprings N, which pass down therefrom and 25 tical section of the device in open condition, are guided under the pulleys P to a place of taken on line a 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a connection with the upper leaf, as at Q, said view of the inside of one end of the device, pulleys being mounted on ears R,- which detaken on line y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a pend from the follower below said hinges, by View of parts shown in Fig. 3 in different powhich provision pressure is so exerted on the o sition. upper leaf as to open the same, and as the Similar letters of reference indicate correleaves are hinged to each other the pressure sponding parts in the figures. is continued to the several leaves, whereby Referring to the drawings, A designates a they may be automatically opened or be casing or a box, from the bottom of which rises thrown out of the box and placed in position 35 the tube B, in which is telescopically fitted to successively expose or present the faces of the stem G, the'top of the latter carrying the the leaves, as again shown in Fig. 2. follower or rising-and-falling table D, whic In order to control the leaves so that but is pressed upwardly by the spring E. one leaf may open or unfold atone time, the
F designates a series of leaves which are ends of the leaves opposite to the hinges there- 4o hinged to each other and to one end of the of are provided with tongues S, which profollower D and are adapted to be folded on ject through a slot in the end of the box into the follower, as in Fig. l, or to be opened, as in the slotT in the plate U,which is hinged to said Fig. 2, after the manner of a sample, display, end and held against the same by the spring or exhibition book, a photographic album, or catch or dogV on the box. On the inner face 5 45 the like, it being noticed that samples, patof said plate U is pivoted the dog W, whose terns, photographic pictures, cards, &c., may nose W is primarily at the back of the upper be applied to the leaves and the latter sucend of the slotTand engages with the tongue cessively presented to View, after which the of the upperleaf, thus controllingthe several leaves may be folded one on the other on the leaves. The lower limb of said dog XV is 50 follower D and the latter pressed down, after provided with a thumb-piece or button X, which the cover or lid G of the box is closed whereby said dog may be operated to remove its nose from the tongue with which it is engaged.
Mounted on the axis of the dog \V is a supplemental dog Y, whose nose Y in normal position is setback of the nose of the dog V, but below the same, as shown in Fig. 3.
Z designates a link or lever, one limb of which is freely connected with the upper part of the dog V, and the other limb is freely connected with the body of the dog Y, whereby motion of the dog XV is imparted to the dog Y, but in reverse order.
In order to retain the parts in their normal position or to return them to the same, I employ the spring Z, which is connected with the plate U and bears against the dog V. (See Fig. 3.)
It will be seen that when the lid is opened the upper leaf is exposed, and when the other leaves are to be viewed the piece X is pressed down. This operates the dog and causes it to move in the present case to the right, referring to Fig. 3. its nose then retiring from the tongue of the upper leaf. Simultaneously therewith the dog Y is advanced in the present case to the left, and its nose passes over the tongue of the second leaf and engages with the latter, so as to hold it on the leaves below it. (See Fig. 4.) As the upper leaf is free, the springs N quickly throw it over and upon the lid G, where its inner face is now above, and the second leaf in the box hasits upper face exposed. \Vhen the thumbpiece is let go, the dogs return to their normal position, the dog Y then retiring from the tongue with which it engages, while the dog \V has its nose placed in the path of said tongue, and as the leaves rise the distance of one leaf the second leaf is locked by the dog \V. It is evident that by continuing the action of the thumb-piece the other leaves may be released and caused to open, Fig. 2 showing leaves one and two as having been fully open and leaf three as partially open and in the act of reaching its predecessors.
The table D is shorter than the leaves F, and the hinged ends of the latterthat rest on said table project beyond the adjacent end of the same, as shown in Fig. 2. The open leaves, or those that rest on the leg II, have no direct support under their hinged ends, but are permitted to bend downwardly under the pressure of the spring N, the hinged ends of the leaves that remain 011 the table being also permitted to bend downwardly, so that when a leaf is released it is subjected to a downward pull atits hinged end and so is thrown in the present case from left to right or from the table to the leg and then lodged on the latter in the manner above stated.
Secured to the upper end of the box A, around the tongue S, is an open frame A,
which forms a guard for preventing improper contact with said tongues.
lVhen all of the leaves have been opened, the plate U is opened and theleaves returned into the dog, when the plate is closed and the dogs again engage with adjacent tongues, thus controlling the leaves and holdingthem folded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A follower, means for supporting the same, a series of leaves hinged to each other and to said follower, and means for elevating said follower.
2. A follower, means for supporting the same, a series of leaves hinged to each other and to said follower, and a spring connected with said follower and leaves for automatically opening the latter.
3. A follower, a telescopic support therefor, a spring for elevating said support, a series of leaves hinged to each other and said follower, in combination with a spring connected with said follower and leaves for automatically opening the latter and a guide on said follower for said spring.
4. A series of leaves hinged to each other and a support therefor, and a spring for automatically opening said leaves in combination with means for alternately releasing and engaging said leaves.
5. In a device of the character stated, a series of hinged leaves, a support on which the sameare mounted and tongues on said leaves, in combination with reversely operating dogs, a support therefor and means for actuating the dogs whereby they may be alternately disengaged from and engaged with the tongues of adjacent leaves.
6. In a device of the character stated, a series of hinged leaves, asupport therefor, and means for successively opening said leaves, in combination with a primary dog, a supplemental dog, a support thereforand a lever connecting said dogs, whereby the dogs may be operated in reverse direction for alternate engagement with and disengagement from adjacent leaves.
7. In a device of the character stated, a series of hinged leaves, a support therefor, a box containing said leaves and support, in combination with a plate movably connected with said box, dogs mounted on said plate and means for operating said dogs in reverse order, whereby said dogs may.be alternately engaged with and disengaged from said leaves.
