IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES FOR DRY PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATES.
Specication forming' part of Letters Patent No. 33,500, dated October' 15, 1861.
To all whom t may colwern Be it known that we, JOHN STOCK and JAKOB STOCK, of New York, in the countyand State 0l New York, have invented a new and Improved Box for Prepared Dry Photo graphic Plates; and'we hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v Figure l represents an outside view; Fig. Il, a top view with the covers removed; Fig. III, a section with the plate-holder attached to receive the glass or plate, and the other figures details referred to below.
The nature vof our invention consists in the construction ol a box for prepared dry photographic plates in such a manner that anyone plate may be passed from said box into the plate-holder without danger or possibility that the external light will be admitted to said plate or plates or during the operation of transferring aplatc from the box tothe platoholder.V
ln the accompanying drawings, A represents a boxwith grooves d on opposite sides on the inside to holdthe prepared plates. In the top of this box two movable slides or covers B and C are made to workin suitable grooves in the sides, the ends of the covers being kept tight, so as to ,prevent the admission of the light, by small pieces of wood ln. and m, (see Figs. Il and IIL) arranged on the ends Ot the box A, covered with cloth or any-soft substance, and forced upward by suitable spriu gs.
The cover B is provided with aprojection d on its lower side to prevent its being put in farther than required, while the upper cover C, afterthe same is in its place, has a screw,- boltf fastened in its end to prevent its being drawn or pulled out. On the other end of the cover C a very small projection o is provided on the under side. The cover 'B has a small .projection won its upper 'side as Well as a small spring s, (see Figs. Ill and IV,) between which saidprojection 1U and spring s the projection o of the cover C lits, for the purpose hereinafter described.
Near one end of the cover C a suitable opening h, Figs. IIIv and V, is provided for the passage ot the glasses or plates. This opening 7L is covered with a slide g,'(shown in red lines imFigs. III and V,') provided with a projecting piece or nose n' and acted upon by a spring p.
On one side of the box A a hinged rod l) is provided capable of movin do.vnward and kept upward through the action of a spring 3. 'lhis rod D, is provided on its upper side with notches corresponding` with the grooves in the box A, which hohl the plates, and said notches are marked or numbered to correspond with the numbers of said grooves. On the end of the cover C aprojection or nose 5 is provided titting into the notches of this rod D, the whole being arranged in such a manner that in whatever notch on the rod l) this nose 5 is moved the opening h in the cover C will thereby be brought over the plate or glass in the correspondingly-marked groove in the box A.
On the lower end of the plate-holder F a' projection or nose r (sec Figs. Ill and Vl) is arranged.
The operation to pass a plate or glass from the box into thc plate-holder is as follows: The cover C is pulled back until the projection o at its end passes the spring s and comes against the projection zr ot the cover B, between which the said cover C is then 'locked to the cover l, when both covers are together moved until the nose 5 on the end ot' the cover C comes into that notch iu the rod D corresponding to the groove d of the box A which contains the plate which is required to be passed into the plate-holder. The plateholder F is then placed upon the cover C by being passed -under the projecting plates l and 6, fastened to the top of said cover. (Sec Figslll and V.) The project-ion r on one side of the end of the plate-holder comes then against the projection or nose :c of the slideg and pushes said slide g back, so as to uncover the opening 7L in the cover C. The back 8 of the plate-holder F is then loosened, and is then by means of its spring g pressed back, bringing at the same time a projection e at the bottom of said back S clear of the opening.v- By turning the box together with the plate-holder over the plate will `.slide out of the box into the plate-holder without any possibility of light being admitted during the operation. The back S of the plate-holder is then fastened by suitable wedges in the usual manner, whereby the plate is held fast in its place in the plate-holder, and at the same time the projection e will be moved over the opening in the bottom of the plate-holder, excluding thereby all light from the inside of said plate-holder. The box and plate-holder are then turned over again, when the plateholder can be removed. At the time the plate-holder is removed from the box or from the cover C the projection a' will come clear of the nose or projection of the slide g, which latter will then be acted upon by the spring p, so as to force said slide over the opening h, and consequently prevent all admission of light to the inside of the box A.
Instead of arranging the box A with mov-Y able covers, as above described, the same may beA placed in another box A", (seeFig. VIL) provided with a rack and pinion on the bottom of the inner box A', whereby the same can be moved back and forth. A suitable opening 71, is in that case provided in the top of the box A ,'covered over by a slide g,con structed similar to the slide g above described and acted upon by a suitable spring to keep the same close over this opening h',
.and operated by the introduction of the plate holder in the manner above mentioned.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. The arrangement of a'box with movable covers, in combination with suitable crosspieees n and m, acted upon by springs to exclude the light from the inner side of said box, constructed in the manner `and for thc purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the projection w at the end of the upper cover, in combination with the projection Iv and spring s on the lower cover, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3. The slide g, covering the hole 7i for the passage of the plate or glass, operated and arranged in the manner and for the purpose set forth'.
fi. The hinged lever or arm D, provided with notches and operated by the spring 3 in the manner and for the purpose described.
5. The projection@` on the side of the plate* holder, acting upon and operating the slide covering the hole in the top cover in the inanner and for the purpose substantially as described and set forth.
