PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE'W. KUNZE, OF BRYANT, W'ASHINGTON;
COMBINED GRMENT HANGER AND LOCK.
' srndIFIcATIoiv forming part of Letters Patentv No. 622,371 5 dated April 4, 189e.
Application filed April 27,1898. Serial No. 678,959. (No model.)
To ail whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KUNZE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryant, in the county of Snohomish and State of W ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Garment Hanger and Lock; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to a combined garment hanger and lock; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive device of` this character by means of which the garment may be hung to a nail, screw, hook, or other supportV locked against the removal of the device from the support or the garment from the device.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of my inven tion, the device being secured to a nail and the garment secured to the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the face of the lock-casing removed, showing t-he relative arrangement of parts when locked. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing theA relative arrangement of parts when the hasp is unlocked and the clampingjaws separated. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the device as it appears when the hasp and jaws are closed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the key.
In the drawings, l denotes the lock-casing, the face of which is provided with a keyhole 2 and one side of which is provided with a keyhole 3.
4 denotes two ears projecting upward from the face and back of the casing and between which is provided a hasp 5, the inner face of which is preferably provided with notches (i, that register with notches 7, formed in an angular support 8, secured against rotation by the pin 9 on the lpivot of the hasp. The upper end of the casing is provided with an opening l2, and the lower side of the casing is provided with two slots 13. 14 denotes a spring-actuated bolt located in said casing and adapted to engage the free end of the hasp and lock it closed.
l5 denotes a fixed clamping-jaw, the lower end of which is curved and provided with a gripping-disk 16 and the upper end of which is fitted in o ne of the slots in the lower sidel of the casing and secured therein against movement. The extreme upper end of this jaw is provided with an ear 17, in which is swiveled ashaft 18, one end of which is formed with a squared portion 19 and the other end with a screw 20. On the screw-threaded end of this shaft is engaged the ear 2l of the op posing clamping-jaw 22, which is provided with a gripping-disk 2 3. It is evident that by rotating the screw the clamping-jaw 22 will be moved toward or away from the xed clamping-jaw according to the direction of rotation of the screw.
24 denotes a spring-plate secured to the free end of the hasp, and when the hasp is locked this plate is-adapted to extend to close the keyhole in the side of the casing and prevent a person from inserting a key through said opening for the purpose of actuating the screw-threaded shaft and thereby removing garment from the device.
25 is the keypost.
26 denotes a key, one end 27 of which fits the squared end of the screw-shaft and the other end 28 being provided with a bit adapted to engage and retract the spring-actuated bolt.
In operation, assuming that the hasp is unlocked and the jaws separated, by inserting the end 27 of the key in its hole and rotating the shaft the clamping-jaws will clamp the garment. In this position the hasp is engaged with the nail, screw, or other support of a similar character and closed down and locked, thus holding the screw, nail, or other support irmly in the registering notches of the hasp and the angular post and locking the device against surrept-itious removal, and when closed it will be noticed that the spring on the end of the hasp will project downward -within,the lock-casing and close the entrance of the keyhole in the side of said casing, and
thereby prevent an ill-disposed person insert IGO ing a key or implement into said hole for the purpose of separating the jaws and removing the garment clamped thereby.
The device is exceedingly simple, may be made at small cost, and owing to its size may be conveniently carried in the vest-pocket.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of l(he character described, the combination of a lock casing having a spring-actuated bolt and a swiveled screwshaft, clamping-jaws, one of which is engaged with the screw-shaft and is movable toward and away from its opposing jaw, a post secured to the lock-casing, and a springhasp pivoted to the lock-casing and adapted to coact with the post to secure a nail or other support between said post and hasp, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lock-casing provided with a spring-actuated bolt and a screw-shaft, clamping-jaws, one of which is mounted on said screw-shaft and is movable toward and away from its opposing jaw, said casing being GEORGE W. KUNZE.
