UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PAUL J. PIATTI, OF \VOODSIDE, NElV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO OTTO A. GROEBER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED COAT AND HAT HANGER AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,228, dated October 2'7, 1896.
Application filed April 11, 1896. Serial No. 587,162. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL J. PIATTI, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVoodside, in the county of Queens and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Coat and Hat Hanger and Look, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined coat and hat hanger and lock, the object of the same being to provide a coat and hat hanger with locking mechanism permitting the possessor of the coat and hat on taking off the same to place them in the device and lock them therein, he being furnished with a key, so that he only can unlock said device for removing his coat and hat, said device being especially adapted for restaurants and like places, for securing to the owner of the coat and hat a comparative safeguard against the removal of his coat and hat by any unauthorized person. I
The invention consists of a combined coat and hat hanger and lock which comprises a lock-casing having means for securing the same to a Wall or other support, locking mechanism contained within the lock-casing and comprising tumblers and a sliding bolt, a stationary arm projecting from said casing and provided with a padded jaw, a movable arm projecting through an opening in the casing and pivoted at its inner end within the same, where said arm is provided with a toe adapted to be engaged by the bolt of the locking mechanism, said pivoted arm being further provided with a padded jaw corresponding to the stationary jaw, and also with an auxiliary padded jaw, an auxiliary arm pivoted to the outer end of the main pivoted arm and provided with a padded jaw corresponding with the second padded jaw of the main pivoted arm, and a locking-link hinged at one end onto a hook of the lock-casing and at the other end passed through a serpentine or other slot in the auxiliary pivoted arm, so that when the locking-bolt is projected to engage behind the toe-piece of the main movable arm for locking its jaw down upon the stationary jaw on the lock-casing the auxiliary jaws will be 50 brought together and there held by reason of the fact that the outer end of the link passes below the pivot connecting the main movable arm and the auxiliary pivoted arm, as will be fullydescribed hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved combined coat and hat hanger and lock, the same being shown in locked position in full lines and in unlocked position in dotted lines. 6c Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the device in locked position, parts of the same being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 at, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the back plate, on which is cast integral therewith a portion B of the lock-casing, said por-- tion comprising the top, front, bottom, and one side of the lock-casing, the other side of the lock-casing being formed by a removable plate B, which is fitted into a rabbet-groove 5, formed in the main part B of the lock-casing and which is secured to the said part B by means of a double-ended screw-bolt 0, one end of which is screwed into one side of the main part of the lock-casin g, while the other end passes through the removable side plate B, where it is screw-threaded to receive a nut O, which, when turned home, firmly clamps the removable plate B against the main part B of the lock-casing. The back plate A is provided with screw-holes a to receive the screws whereby the device may be secured to a wall or other object in a restaurant or other place, while the part of the back plate which is bounded by the lock-casing is left open, such opening A affording means whereby access may be obtained to the locking mechanism when the affixing-screws a are removed, thus avoiding the necessity of separating the parts of the lock-casing to see what, if anything, is the matter with the 5 locking mechanism inside.
An inwardly-projecting lug or foot-flange 13 is arranged on the rear edge of the side plate B, which lug has a screw-threaded opening to receive a set-screw t that passes through an orificed lug or flange A extending from the back plate A into its opening A,
whereby a security of fastening is obtained in addition to that obtained by the screw-bolt G. The advantage of the screw connection 7) is that if a person of meddlesome or thieving disposition endeavors to obtain access to the locking mechanism by removing the screwbolt C the screw 19 will prevent the detachment of the plate B, and before the screws (0 could be removed the party would be apprehended. Inasmuch as the back plate is open, it is evident that instead of employing the two screw connections for the different parts of the lock-casing the bolt A may be provided with right and left hand screw-threads, respectively, which screw may be turned by inserting a suitable tool through the opening of the back plate.
Guided within the lock-casing is a sliding bolt D, which is actuated by means of a spring at, and the body of which is formed at its upper end with a wide shouldered portion D, that extends the whole width of the lockcasin g, said bolt being provided with the usual side projection d, which takes in the notches formed in the upper ends of the tumblers 6 whenever the tumblers are actuated to obtain the retraction of the bolt by means of a suitable key, which is inserted through the keyhole-guide E and into the rotary barrel E in the customary manner. So far for the locking portion of my improved coat and hat hanger and lock. The main portion of the invention, however, resides in the holding devices with which said locking mechanism is adapted for the purpose of fastening the coat and hat so that no one but the owner can obtain access thereto.
Projecting forwardly from the lower part of the lock-casing is an upwardly-curved stationary arm F, which at its upper outer end is formed with an enlarged jaw F, provided with a slightly-tapering T-groove that receives a correspondingly-shaped pad f, whereby said jaw is cushioned. Fulcrumed upon the bolt 0 of the lock-casing at its inner end is a movable curved arm G, which extends through a top guide-opening b in the lockcasing and is provided with an opposing jaw G, complementary to the stationary jaw F, said jaw G being likewise provided with a slightly-tapering T-groove for receiving a pad g, similar to the pad f, said jaws F and G and the padsf and 9 being arranged in line, so as to establish a positive clamping action when they are sprung together. At the pivoted end of the movable arm G the same is provided with a depending toe-piece g", which is adapted to take behind the shoulder D on the bolt of the locking mechanism whenever the movable jaw is pressed down against the fixed jaw.
An auxiliary jaw 11 is formed on the outer end of the movable arm G, said jaw being arranged at right angles to the other jaw, G, and being, like the latter, also furnished with a slightly-tapering T-groove which receives a correspondiugly-shaped pad 71, whereby said jaw is cushioned, an opposing jaw I, which is likewise furnished with a pad 2', being formed on an auxiliary movable arm J, which is pivoted to a branch G of the main movable arm G atj. The auxiliary pivoted jaw J is furnished at its outer end with an upwardly-extending knob J, whereby the same may be co11veniently opened and closed when desired. Formed in the auxiliary movable arm J is a serpentine or other suitably -shaped slot k, which receives one end of a link K, the other en d of which is hinged over a hook 712, projecting from the upper end of a base-plate A. The disposition. and arrangement of the link K, the hook 7c, the pivot j, connecting the auxiliary movable arms together, and the slot 7a in the auxiliary arm are such as that when the link K passes below the plane of the pivot 7 the auxiliary movable arm J cannot be moved so as to open its jaw without also the main movable arm G is permitted to move, for the reason that the circles described by the portion of the link K which passes through the slot 713 and by the pivot j are not concentric. The device is operated and used as follows:
011 entering a restaurant or other place f urnished with a number of the same a person removes his coat and places the neck portion of the same upon the padded stationary jaw F, so that the coat is suspended therefrom. He then takes his hat and places the brim of the same between the padded auxiliary jaws II and I, whereupon he presses upon the arms G and J, so as to spring all of the jaws together and clamp the coat and hat in position, the same being automatically locked by reason of the fact that the shoulder D of the bolt D i11- stantly springs upwardly under the action of its spring d, so that said shoulder takes behind the toe-piece on the main movable arm G, thus firmly locking the hat and coat in position.
The notch (Z in the bolt, which receives the bit of the key, is so formed as that the bit cannot pass more than about a quarter-revolution in the act of opening the mechanism, so that when the toe-piece of the main movable arm G bears upon the top of the shoulder D of the bolt it is impossible to turn the key either way in the look without first the jaws are closed, as when a hat and coat are hung in locked position. Consequently when a person arrives in the restaurant he will find the key in the lock of the hanger which is assigned him. This prevents accidental loss of the key, as it is intended that the key only be removed while the owner of the hat and coat is using the device. For
unlocking the mechanism the owner of the coat and hat places the key in the slotted barrel, as usual, and retracts the bolt D, so that the toe-piece g on the movable arm can clear the shoulder D of the bolt, this clearance bein g obtained instantly witho ut the owner placing his hands on the mechanism, as it is only necessary that the hat be grasped at the same time that the locking mechanism is retracted,
for, by reason of the elasticity in the pads of the jaws, there will be a tendency of the latter to spring apart, thus enabling the rem oval of the hat. As the jaws F and G will also have been opened by this movement, the coat can also be removed.
This device forms a very desirableaccessory for restaurants, halls, and other similar places, as a comparative safeguard is thereby furnished the owners of coats and hats, preventing unauthorized persons from removing the coat or hat, as each lock in the restaurant requires a diiferent key.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a combined coat and hat hanger and lock, the combination, with a lock-casing provided with an arm having a jaw, of an arm pivoted at its inner end within the lock-casing, and provided with a jaw opposite the aforesaid jaw, said pivoted arm also having an auxiliary jaw, an auxiliary arm pivoted to the pivoted arm and provided with a jaw opposing the said auxiliary arm, said arm and its jaw and the auxiliary jaw constituting a hat-holding device, and a link or connecting-piece connected loosely with the auxiliary arm and with the lock-casing, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined coat and hat hanger and lock, the combination, with a lock-casing provided with a stationary arm having a jaw, of
a movable arm pivoted at its inner end within the casing, and provided with a jaw opposing said stationary jaw, and also with an auxiliary jaw, an auxiliary arm pivoted to the main movable arm and provided with a jaw opposing said auxiliary jaw, mechanism for looking the main jaws together, and means connected with the casing of said locking mechanism for obtaining the closing of the auxiliary jaws, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined coat and hat hanger and lock, the combination of a lock-casing provided with a stationary arm having a jaw, of a movable arm pivoted at its inner end within the lock-casing, and provided with a jaw opposing said stationary jaw and also with an auxiliary jaw arranged at an angle to the other jaw, an auxiliary arm pivoted to said main movable arm and provided with a jaw opposing the auxiliary jaw of the latter, said auxiliary arm being slotted, a hinged link passing through said slot, and locking mechanism within the lock-casing provided with a bolt, adapted to lock against a portion of the main movable arm, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL J. PIATTI.
