'Be it .known that 1, WILLIAM F. DIESEL, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Look Mechanisms; and-I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a-' relations where a lock mechanism maybe re Fig.2;

quired. The parts arefconstructed and assembled in sucha way asto insure'consider- 'able strength and durability, and the device as a whole is susceptible of ready attachment to a door, or casing, or otherwise, for
use in connection with'ithe bolt of a lock.- A further advantage of the invention is. tobe found in'its efficiency, as determined by the improbability. of the parts becominginany way disarranged and-the difiiculties in theway of the lock being picked or accidentally opened. A further object of the. improvement isto afford a novel construction involving various detail features in tumbler lock constructions. To these and other ends the invention consists, in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, then'ovel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. The invention may belcarried out and,
adapted in a number of diiferent ways, with.- out departing from its essential characteristics, and in the present application I have shown,its use in connection with a structure that includes a casing 1 and a lock bolt 2 that is movable within the casing into and.-
The structure out of locking position. which constitutes the present improvement is illustrated in controlling relation with the bolt 2 whereby the latter can not be moved from its locking position except when the Q lock mechanism which I am about to describe T is released. v r The structure comprises 1n its general aspect a stationary housing within which is arranged a rotary barrel, the movement of which controls the position of the bolt 2. The barrel referred to carries a. plurality of locking tumblers which normally'retain the barrel in locked relation with the housing, and
are movable to release the barrel upon the" insertion of a properly formed key that Cojoperates with'the differenttumblers where upon the barrel may be rotated to operate the bolt.
With these general purposes in view, the structure embodies a housing 3 provided with openings 4 and'5 atthe top andbot. 'tom, .and held in place in the door or other support 6 by means of threaded bolts 7- which engage correspondingly threaded openings 8 of the housing. 9 is .a barrel which is rotati-vely arranged within the hous .ing and provided With openings 10 normally disposed in coincidence with-the openings post 11 provided with an opening to receive a key 12, and arranged .on the post 11 is a plurality or -series of tumblers 13 e'ach'havwill'be observed that each tumbler 13 is provided with twolocking or end portions 15, one of which is engaged with the housing. 3 when in normal locked relation while the other portion 15 is disengagedf To release the lock and permit the barrel to be "lili thehousing' as" shown in Fig. 3. The l barrel 9 also carries; an axially arranged turned, each tumbler must be moved to the position indicated in 'Fig. 4.- in which both end portions are disengaged from the housing 3, and if an improper key is employed or improper means are utilized to open the lock; one or more of the tumblers are likely to be withdrawn too far from the housing 3, so that while the portion that normally locks the barrel may be brought into unlocked relation with the housing 3, the opposite end portion of the barrel will be moved far enough to engage the housing 3 and prevent turning of the barrel. This double locking characteristic of thetumblers is a greater insurance against unauthorized opening of the lock, because if any one tumbler is moved slightly beyond its predetermined position for unlocking it will act to maintain the barrel'against movement. The tumblers 15 are normally mamtalned 1n locking relation with the housing 8, that is with one end engaged with the opening 4, as a pears in Fig. 3, by means of springs 1 l .oneof which is attached to each tumbler andengages a shoulder 16 on the barrel, acting. toelevate the tumbler to the position shown in Fig. 3. Each tumbler is provided with a cam surface 18 formed differently in the respective tumblers, and the key 12 carrles a series of grooves or serrations that afford shoulders for proper cooperation with the cam surfaces on the tumblers, so that when the key is fully inserted and turned, it causes the tumblers to move radially of the barrel until their upper ends are withdrawn from the opening 4, and'thereby disengaged from the housing. Continued turning of-the key rotates the'barrel, and With it i a controlling member 18 which is preferably Y of the features or the precise arrangement carried by the barrel and operatively connected to the bolt 2.
The invention is not to be limited to any herein shown and described; as it is intended to cover any modifications or departures that may come within the spirit of my improvement, and the scope of the plaims hereto appended.
I claim asmy invention: 1.'A lock mechanism comprising a housing-havingan opening therein, a barrel arranged in the housing and provided with an opening normally in coincidence with the opening in the housing, an axially disposed post in the barrel, a plurality of tumblers having gulding openingscooperating with said-post and slidable thereon radially of the barrel into and out ofengage-men-t with the opening in the housing, springs engaging the tumblers and acting to retain them normally in locked relation with. the housing, and cam surfaces on the tumblers adapted to be engaged by a key to efiect sliding of the tumblers, and a controlling member carried by the, barrel.
2. A lock mechanism comprising a housing, a. barrel rotatively arranged in the housing, a plurality of tumblers normally holding the housing and barrel in locked relation and movable to release the barrel and permit it to rotate, and cam surfaces disposed on the tumblersat varying distances from the center of the barrel adapted to be engaged by a key to efi'ect sliding of the tumblers and springs acting to return the tumblers to normal position.
3. A look mechanism comprising a housing, a barrel rotativelyarranged in the housing, an axially disposed post in the barrel, a pluralityof tumblers having guiding openings cooperating-with said post and slidable thereon radially of the barrel,
springs engaging the tumblers and actingto center of the barrel and arranged to be en gaged by a key inserted in said post; when the latter is rotated.

A lock mechanism comprising a housing having an opening therein, a barrel arranged in the housing and provided with an opening normally in coincidence with the opening in the housing, a plurality of tumblers slidable radially of the barrel into and out of engagement with the openin-gin the housing, springs engaging the tumblers and acting to retain themnormally in locked relation with the housing, and cam surfaces disposed on the tumblers at varying distances' from the center of the barrel and arranged to be engaged by a key when inserted and rotated within the barrel to efiect sliding of the tumblers.
