Be it known that I, EMIL A. CHRIsToPH, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Padlocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in padlocks.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of padlocks, while at the same time increasing their eiiectiveness by rendering them diflicult to open by anyone not having the proper key.
The invention consists, in one of its as poets, in the combination with the usual shackle and locking bolt or a padlock, of a rotatable plug controlling the operation of said locking bolt and carrying a plurality of tumbler Plates adapted to be moved transversely or and through the plug, the tumbler plates being constructed to fit on a special key so that when they are assembled in the lock only the key so fitted is capable of aligning the tumblers to permit rotation of the plug.
Other novel features of my invention will be set forth in the following specification, and more particularly defined in the claims.

Fig. 7 is a section along the line 7--7 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, the casing of the padlock is made up of two half portions 10 and 11 held together by means of the shouldered rivets 12, 13, 141 and 15. Pivotally mounted on the rivet 12 is the shackle 16, having notches 17 and 18 at its opposite ends. The locking bolt 19 is pivotally mounted on the shouldered, rivet 1 4. and is provided with the lug 20, which engages the notch 18 to hold the shackle in locked posi tion. The hooked end 21 of the locking bolt 18 engaged by a projecting member 22 on the rotatable plug 23 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
The single leaf springQi, heldinposition around the shouldered rivet 15, tends to hold the locking bolt in looking position in the notch 18, due to the engagement of the lower end of the spring with the lug .25, on. the locking bolt. The spring also tends to throw the shackle into open position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, due to the engagement of its up er end with the notch v17.
The rotatab eplug 23 is provided with a transverse opening 26 in which are locateda plurality of thinilat plates or tumblers 2.7,
which are freely slidable on each other and in and through said transverse opening 26. Each of said tumblers is provided with a slot 28 capable of receiving a key 29, which enters the end of the plug 23 through the key slot 30. The rotatable plug 23 is mounted in the plug housing 31, fastened to the front half 10 of thecasing. This housing has two diametrically opposite recesses 32 and 33 into which the tumblers project, as shown in Fig. 4, when the key 29 is withdrawn from the lock. However, when the key is in operative position in the plug the tumblers are all withdrawn from the recesses and aligned to prevent a true cylindrical surface, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and permit rotation of the plug in its housing, the rotation being limited by the engagement of the lower end of the projecting member 22 with the lug 34 formed on the plug housing. The rotatable plug isheld in the casing by .the engagement of shoulder 35 with the front half 10, the rear end of the plug projecting into the recess 36 in the rear half 11 of the casing.
In this form of lock the tumbler plates must be constructed and cut tofit the key instead of the key being cut to fit the tumblers, so that when the tumblers are assembled in the plug and placed in the casing only the to throw the shackle 16 into the openposition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.-
Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention,
many modificationsmay be made Without departing from the spirit'of'the invention or itsfscope as set forth in the appended claims. I r V What I clalm as my 1nvent1on,and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

a "spring normally tending. to hold the shackle in open position, awlocking bolt for said shackle, a rotatable plug in said casin extending transversely of the sides 'thereo and having a vertical portion engaging said locking bolt to move it out of locking position when the-plug is rotated, a housing for saidplug'extending inwardly from one side of the casing and terminating short of the opposite side'the'reoi said housing having diametrically opposed recesses, and a plu- *rahtyof tumblers in said plug normally projecting into said recesses/to prevent the rotation of said plug and capable of being aligned by means of a specially designed 'key't'o permit the rotation of the plug.

a housing for said plug connected with one side of the casing and extending transversely thereof, said housing being fashione'd to receive locking tumblers and a plurality of tumbler plates carried by and adapted to be moved transversely of and through said plug, said tumbler plates being constructed to fit on a special key so a that when they are assembled in the lock the key so fitted is capable of aligning the tumblers to permit rotation of the plug to operate the locking bolt.

locking bolt for the shackle, a rotatable looking plug extending transversely ofthe sides of the casing, a housing for said plug proj ecting from one side, of the casing'and terminating short of the other and having' pockets therein, tumblers carried by the said locking plug adapted to seat in said pockets to lock the plug, a keyway in the plugfor receiving a key to release the tumblers to permit rotation of the plug, and a projecting part carried by the plugla'nd located atone side of the housing forengagingthe locking'bolt to release the shackle.
