IMPROVED MOP-HEAD.
@tige .tigehule retract it in lgese tcttrrs ntnrt mit milking pnt nf tige samt.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN: i Be it known that we, H. H. MAsoNrand JOSEPH MnssIN'cEn, -of Springfield 1n the county of Windsor, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and improved Mop-Head; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usc the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved mop-head of that class in which a screw and a ratchet and pawl'arc employed for operating the jaws and retaining the same in position to hold the mop-cloth. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure l'is a side sectional view of our invention.
Figure 2, a detached view of the ratch'et and jaw connected therewith.
A represents a portion of the wooden handle'of a'mop-head, and B is a metal screw, attached or fitted permanently thereto. C is a metal ferrule, placed on the handle A'at the inner end of the screw B, said ferrule having a shoulder a at its outer end to retain a ratchet, D, thereon, the teeth of the ratchet being at its inner edge, adjoining the''errnle C. In the ferrule C there is fitted a. pawl, E, which engages withthe teeth of the ratchet under the influence of a spring, c, as shown clearly in iig. 1, the pawl preventing the ratchet from turning in i )ne direction, hut not interfering with the free movement of the ratchet in the other direction. The ratchet l D has two projecting ears or lugsd OZ, to which the ends of one jaw, F, of the mop-head are attached, the
other jaw,.G, being provided with a socket or tube, e, at its centre, having an internal screw to work on the` screw B. The ends of the jaw G are provided with notches or grooves to receive the sides of the jaw F; and it will be seen that by turning the A4jaw F the jaw G will also be turned. In order to secure the mopcloth between the two jaws F G, the jaw F may be held stationary by one hand and 'the handle A, and, consequently, the screw B turned by the other, the pawl E admitting of this, and the jaw G will be therefore moved towards the outer side, f, of jaw F, and the mop-cloth secured between the jaws, the pawl E preventing the jaw G from moving back. In order to detach the mop-cloth the pawl E is pressed inward so as to be clear or free from the teeth of the ratchet and the jaw E, turned from left to right; this turning of the jaw E causing the other jaw G, owing tothe connection between them, as previously referred to, to also turn and to be moved back, owing to its female screw in the socket or tube c Working on the screw B. By this means the mop-cloth may be readily secured between and detached from the jaws and a very simple and efficient mop-head obtained.
We do not claim any of the within-described parts separately and .independentlyof the arrangement l herein shown and described, but We do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The fixed screw B on the handle A, in combination with thc ratchet D on the ferrule C, the pawl E, the jaw G, provided with a tube or socket having an internal screw-thread to Work on the screw B, and the jaw F connected to the ratchet D and fitting in the ends of the jaw G, substantially as and'for the purpose herein set forth. l
The above specification `of our invention signed by us this 24th day of December, 1866.
H. n. MASON, JOSEPH MEssINeER.
