UNITED STATT-3s ATENT rricn.
STEPHEN D. FRANKLIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,055, dated March 14, 1899. Application filed Tune 22, 1898. Serial No. 684,130. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. FRANKLIN, a citizen of the Uni-ted States of America, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates tothe construction of a movable toy, and has for its object to provide an interesting and amusing toy of this kind.
The nature of my invention will be best understood as described in connection with the drawings in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure lis a side elevation of the toy; Fig. 2, a plan view taken on the section-line l l of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2.
A Aindicate two castings forming what may be called the support of the toy and adapted when secured together, as by means of rivets B B, to have the conformation of a pistol, the grip beinghollowed out, as indicated, to form a spring-chamber and the castings having openings, as indicated at A' and A2, for the passage of arms of the trigger-lever.
C C indicate pin-like projections in the cavity of the grip, their purpose being to serve as a support and anchorage for the spring indicated at G.
D is an erect figure secured on the support, as indicated, and having a limb, preferably a leg, as indicated at D, pivotally secured to it, the pivot in the drawings being indicated at d.
E is a three-armed lever which may be best described as a trigger-lever. It passes through the openings A and A2, as shown, and is pivotally secured to the support at F. Its lower arm E serves as the trigger for the toy pistol, and its upper arm E3 is connected by a rod or bar I with a pivoted leg DQ the connections I' and I2 being of course pivotal. The third arm E2 of the lever E rests against the end of the spring G and is so formed with reference to the pivot F of the lever E that when the trigger-arm E is moved forward and the leg D' is substantially vertical the end e of the arm E2 will restin such position against the spring that the line of thrust thereof will pass through or below the pivot F, while by moving the trigger-arm E' backward the arm E2 is moved over the spring until the contact between them is at a point, such as e', on the under side of the arm and the direction of the line of thrust is transferred to the upper or right-hand side of the pivot F, whereupon the force of the spring is exerted to move the trigger-lever and through the rod I to throw out the pivoted leg D.
H is a figure adapted to be loosely supported on the front of the support or pistolbarrel, and so that when erect thereon a portion thereof, as shown, the seat H2, will lie within thepath of and be struck by the forwardly-moving limb of the figure D and in such a way that the figure H will be overthrown thereby. Preferably I secure the iigure H to the front of the pistol-barrel by an extension H', lying in a slot A3 at the end of the pistol-barrel and pivotally connected with the walls thereof, as by pivot extensions H2, so that when the figure H is overthrown it will swing downward through an arc of one linndred and eighty degrees. Preferably, also, I provide at the point of the ligure H which is struck by the figure D means for securing an explosive cap, such means being indicated at H4 and consisting, as shown, of a notch adapted to receive the edge of a paper cap.
It will be readily understood that the general conception of my new toy may be embodied in somewhat different forms without departure from my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself specifically to the exact construction shown, except where the claims specically refer to such construction.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t-o secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A toy comprising a support, a ligure D secured thereon and having a pivoted limb, a spring, G, a pivoted three-armed triggerlever E having its arm E2 arranged as specilied with reference to the spring and the pivot F, a connecting-rod I pivotally connected to the arm E3 of lever E and to the pivoted limb of the igure D, and a second figure H adapted to be loosely connected with the support within the range of movement of the pivoted limb of the first figure and so as to be struck and overthrown thereby.
IOO
2. A toy comprising a support in the form of a pistol, the upright figure of a man D secured thereto by one leg and having a Second pivoted leg D', a spring, and means for swinging the leg D' forward arranged to be actuated thereby, a trigger for setting and releasing the spring, and a second ligure H pivotally connected to the front of the support andarranged when erect to be struck and overthrown by the forward swing of the pivoted leg aforesaid.
3. A toy comprising a support in the form of a pistol, the upright figure of aman D secured thereto by one leg and having a second pivote-d leg D, a spring, and means for swinging the leg D forward arranged to b e actuated thereby, a trigger for setting and releasing the spring, and a second gure H pivotally connected to the front of the support and arranged When erect to be struck and overthrown by the forward swing of the pivoted leg aforesaid, and means for securing an ex plosive cap at the point on the second figure Where it is so struck.
