MUSICAL CARRIAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,543, dated February 14, 1899.

Be it known that I, EMMA L. OADY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Musical Carriages, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to certain improvements in toy musical carriages which are trundled by hand; and the object is to provide means, with the carriage and musical instrument, to prevent the operation of the said musical instrument when the carriage is trundled backward and also to provide means whereby the said instrument may be thrown out of gear entirely when desired, so that it will not be operated when the carriage is rolled in either direction.

Heretofore toy musical carriages have not been provided with means to prevent the operation of the musical instrument when the carriage was rolled backward, and for this reason the music was imperfect when the car riage was so operated, and in some cases the musical instrument was injured and soon completely ruined by such operations. By my invention this objection is overcome, and the operation of the musical instrument is automatically stopped as soon as the backward movement takes place, but is again operative when moved forward.

To this end my invention consists in the combination, with a carriage provided with wheels and an axle which rotates with the wheels and a musical instrument mounted on the carriage and having a shaft to be operated, of a loose gear-wheel on the said shaft in mesh with a pinion secured upon the axle, a ratchet-wheel secured to the shaft of the musical instrument, and a pawl pivoted on the said gear-wheel and engaging the ratchetwheel; and my invention consists in certain other combinations of parts hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention with one of the rear wheels removed. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged side elevation of the music-box and Fig. 3 shows the rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 shows a fragmentary view of the reverse side of the gear-wheel and the ratchet-and-pawl mechanism.

Referring specifically to the drawings, A represents the body of the carriage, B and B the wheels, and O and O the axles. The axle O is secured rigidly in its wheels so that it will turn with them.

The vehicle shown in the drawings is a childs doll-carriage; but it will be obvious that my invention may be applied to a larger carriage, that the body may be of any suitable shape or design, and that even the gearing may be modified without departing from my invention.

Beneath and upon the bottom of the body A of the carriage and above the rear axle O I mount a small music-box D, that is capable of playing one or more tunes.

The music-box shown in the drawings is a toy which is usually operated by a crank or a spring. The only change made in the box is the removal of the worm-gearing, the shaft of the pin-drum (not shown) being in this case provided with a gear-wheel E, which is engaged by a pinion F on the rear axle of the carriage. The musical instrumentv is contained in the box D or covering and is secured to the lower side of a board D, which is in turn secured to the bottom of the body. The gear-wheel E is loose on the shaft of the music-box; but the ratchet-wheel e is keyed or otherwise rigidly secured to the shaft between the gear-wheel and the box. A dog or pawl a is pivoted to the inner side of the rim of the gear-wheel and is adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel and to rotate the gear-wheel when the carriage is moved forward, but when moved backward will ride upon the teeth of the ratchet-wheel and not turn the ratchet-wheel or operate the musical instrument.

For the purpose of preventing entirely the operation of the instrument, which is sometimes desirable, I provide one of he spokes of the gear-wheel E with a lug c and an adjustable screw I) therein to engage the pawl. The screw is preferably a thumb-screw, as shown. By a turn or two of the said screw the pawl is lifted out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel, which prevents the operation of the pin-drum whether the carriage is moved backward or forward. A wire spring f is secured to the inner side of the rim of the gear-wheel and presses the pawl toward the ratchet.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
