Application filed July 2, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BELKNAP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy Band-l/Vagon, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to toys and has for an object to provide an improved construction wherein a combined wagon and music box is provided, arranged to operateindepcndently or simultaneously.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy in the shape of a band wagon. and provided with a talking machine, and means for connecting the talking machine and wheels of the band wagon with the same drivin motor.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a toy in the form of a band wagon wherein by a proper adjustment the wagon may be moved along, or the talking machine arranged in the wagon caused to operate independently.

Figure 1 is a side view of a band wagon disclosing an embodiment of the invention, certain parts being broken away for better illustrating the construction.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the wagon shown in Fig. 1', with the top thereofmoved or swung to one side.
Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary sectional view through Fig. 1 on line 3-3.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but with certain of the moving parts removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a wagon body which is hollow and which is provided with a hinged member 2 and with a number of seats 3 arranged thereon containing figures 4, which are preferably removable, arranged in place and held in position normally by a pin 5 extending from the figure through a suitable aperture in the seat. The body 1 is supported by front wheels 6 and rear wheels 7, the rear wheels being preferably both secured rigidly to a rear axle 8, though if desired one of the rear wheels could be loosely mounted on said axle. This axle has a beveled gear 9 ri idly secured thereto adapted to mesh at ifi'erent times with beveled gear 10 rigidly secured to shaft 11. to body 1 and acts as a journal box for shaft 8. A suitable opening 12 is provided in the bottom of body 1 so that the shaft 11 may swing from the upper end 14 where it is loosely journaled in a suitable frame 15. By this'pivotal journaling, in a substantially universal manner, the lower end of shaft 11 is allowed to swing back and forth and as the gear 10 is rigidly secured thereto it will be moved into engagement with the beveled gear 9 and .out of engagement therewith according to the position of'shaft 11. A pinion 16 is also rigidly secured to shaft 11 within the body 1, said pinion meshing with the large gear 17 secured to the power shaft 18, of a spring motor 19 of any desired description, said. spring motor being partially inclosed by the frame 15. This spring motor drives the shaft 19' which is rotatably secured to the table 20, said rotatable table 20 forming part of the talking machine. This table is adapted to carry a record 21 which is positioned to operate the sound box 22 connected with the horn 23, which horn is hinged at 24 to the front part of the body 1. The hinge 24 has a supporting pivotal pin 25 extending through one of the leaves thereof into the horn 23 whereby the horn is permitted a universal movement to' accon1 modate the sound box 22.
In order to wind the motor 19 a crank 26 is provided. at the front of the body 1 and extends through the body and through a suitable partition 27 into the motor 19 where it is connected with one of the wheels thereof through the beveled gear 28. A threaded tubular sleeve 29 is interposed in the crank shaft or rod 30 and the locking member 31 is connected with the frame 15 and engages the inner section 32 of the rod 30 so as to prevent any reverse movement thereof. The locking member 31 is merely a coiled wire secured at one end to the frame 15 and loosely engaging the section 32, though the end of the wire opposite that engaging the spring 15 frictionally presses against the section 32 continually, whereby when the section 32 is rotated in one direction the locking member 31 will grip the same and stop its rotation, while if'th'e section 32 is rotated. in the opposite direction it may freely move. This device therefore permits a ready winding of the spring motor 19, but prevents any unwinding thereof. In case the crank 26 should hero- 'tated in the wrmig direction. in. spite of the resistance of the spring clutch 31 the section 33 will become unscrewed from the sleeve 29 so that the parts will not be injured. In order to stop the turn-table 20 a brake 34 is provided, the same being a block of wood, or other desired material connected with the rod 35 so that when moved a certain distance in one direction it will engage the table 20. Rod 35 extends to the front of the body 1 and is pivotally connected to a lever 38 so that the brake may be applied or disengaged at any time. The rod is guided in its movement by wall 27 through which it passes and by the clutch 37. The action of the brake 34 will not only stop the turntable 20, but will also stop the motor whereby the entire band wagon will be stopped. In case it should be desired to stop the wagon from moving and at the same time permit the talking machine to operate, a clutch 37, shown more particu larly in Fig. 3 is provided. This clutch may be formed independent, but is preferably formed integral with rod 35, and is bentback upon itself, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to produce cam 39 arranged to engage the shaft 11 so as to move the same in the proper direction for causing the gear wheel 10 to move into mesh with the gear wheel 9. As the gear wheel 10 is continually rotating whenever motor 19 is operating the meshing of these gears will result in the driving of axle 8, consequently either one, or both of the rear wheels 7 may be secured to this axle. .t will be observed that by a rearward movement of the rod 35 clutch 37 will be moved to an unclutched position, so that the power is disconnected from the axle 8 and by a reverse movement of the red the clutch will be again thrown in. In connection with this action of the clutch it will be noted that the brake 3& for the turntable 20 is positioned to release the turntable 20 before the clutch 37 actuates the shaft 11. This will permit the talking machine to operate without driving the wheels 7. By a further forward movement of the rod 35 the brake 3% will be merely moved farther from the table and clutch 37 will be thrown in for connecting the motor 19 with the rear wheels 7. Preferably the lever 38 is arranged so as to be in a vertical position when brake 34. is moved a short distance from the turntable 20 and to be an appreciable distance therefrom when the clutch 37 is thrown in, the lever 38 being then at a forward angle. l/Vhen the clutch is thrown out the action of the gear teeth of the respective gears 9 and 10 will cause the gear wheel 10 to automatically move away from gear wheel 9.
In operation the lever 38 is moved pivotally as far forwardly as possible so as to throw out the clutch 37 and to apply the brake '34.. Crank 26 is then grasped and turned until motor 15) has been wound. The lever 38 is then moved, for instance to av vertical position, which will disengage the brake 34L from the table 20 and permit the talking machine to operate. To connect the motor 19 with the rear wheels 7 lever 38 is given another movement so that it is inclined to the rear, whereupon the forward movement of the rod 35 will cause the cam 39 to shift the gear 10 so as to mesh with gear 9. This shifting of the gear 10 is accomplished without in any way allceting the turntable 20 whereby the wagon will move along and at the same time the talking machine will operate. It will be noted that both the talking machine and the wheels of the wagon are operated by the same motor without any interll rence. and that the wheels of: the wagon may be thrown out without disturbing the operation of the talking machine.
What I claim is:
1. A toy band wagon comprising a body, a cover hinged to the top of the body, a plurality of figures indicating a band arranged on said cover, a talking machine arranged in said body, traction wheels for said body, and a single driving member for driving said traction wheels and said talking machine.
2. A toy band wagon comprising a wagon construction having a hollow body and traction wheels, a motor for driving said wheels. a clutch for throwing said motor into and out of connection with said wheels, a talking machine arranged in said body, means connecting the talking machine with the motor whereby the talking machine may be driven. and a braking member for stopping said talking machine.
3. A toy band wagon comprising a hollow body, traction wheels for said body, a talking machine arranged in the body, a single driving mechanism for said talking machine and said wheels, means controlled from the exterior of the front of the body for connecting said wheels with sai d driving means, and controlling means arranged exteriorly of the front of the body for controlling said talking machine.
4. A toy band wagon comprising a body, a plurality of figures on top of the body representing a band, traction wheels for supporting the body, a talking machine arranged in the body, a motor for driving the talking machine, a clutch for stopping the talking machine, a swinging driving gear connected with said motor, a beveled gear connected with the rear traction wheels of the body, and a clutch for throwing said swinging gear into mesh with said beveled gear whereby the same motor which drives the talking machine will drive the traction wheels.

A toy band wagon comprising a hollow body, a hinged top for said body, a plurality of seats arranged on top of said hinged top, a plurality of movable figures mounted on said seats representin a band, a talking machine arranged in sai body, means for driving said ta king machine, means extending to the front of the body for controlling said talking machine, traction members for said body, and means for driving certain of said traction members whereby the wagon will move.
6. A toy band wagon comprising a body,
a talking machine arranged in the body, a
plurality of traction wheels for supporting the body, a gear wheel connected with one of the traction wheels, a motor arranged in the body for driving said talking machine, a swinging rotatable shaft, a pinion connected with said shaft rotated by said motor, said shaft extendin through the bottom of said bod a bevele gear rigidly secured to said sha t adapted to be moved into engagement with the beveled gear connected with one of said traction wheels and to move out of engagement therewith, and an operating rod formed with a cam section for engaging said swinging shaft and moving same in one direction or causing the beveled gear carried thereby to meshwith the beveled gear connected with said traction Wheel.
7 A toy band wagon comprising a body, a talking machine arranged in the body, a plurality of traction wheels for supporting the body, a spring motor, means for connecting the spring motor with the talking machine for operating the same, means for connecting the spring motor with certain of said traction wheels for rotating the same, a brake for stopping said talking machine, a clutch for connecting and disconnecting certain of the traction wheels with said motor, and a single operated rod for shifting both said brake and said clutch.
