' JOHN H. BEDINGFIELD, OF BETHLEHEM, GEORGIA.
TABLE-SCREEN AND FLY-FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,980, dated February 7, 1899.
Application filed April 11,1898. Serial No. 677,249. (No model.)
or the like when lowered in place thereon,
and when raised from the table or counter by suitable elevating devices said screen forms a support for a fan, suitable devices being employed to operate the fan through the screen, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The drawing represents in side elevation the complete device mounted in operative position.
Similar letters of reference. refer to similar parts throughout.
A represents a frame of box-like form having an open bottom and covered with suitable screening material.
B B are'cords or other suitable flexible sus pension devices having their ends attached to the four corners of the frame A, at the top or bottom thereof, as shown, and looped through hooks I I I I or similar suspensionfixtures rigidly attached to the ceiling or other support and spaced apart in the man ner shown.
C is a pull-cord attached centrally of the looped portions of cords B B, passing over a pulley D and thence downwardly to a point within convenient reach of the operator. The end of pull-cord O has a ring E, which is adapted to pass over a peg or suitable securing device E for an obvious purpose.
By the means described the screen may be readily raised from and lowered upon the tasupport above and its other end provided with a ring, through which cord F passes and is guided. These means enable the frame and fans to be oscillated by manual power.
J is a lever having its fulcrum-point at K where it is hinged to the ceiling and provided at its lower end with hook K to enter and engage at suitable times a hole K in the upper edge of the frame A. Intermediate its ends lever J is provided with a pitman M, hinged or pivoted thereto at one of its ends, the said pitman being provided at its opposite end with a suitable bearing for the downturned end of a short crank N, the latter being rigid on the spindle of a pinion M.
I is a gear in mesh with pinion M, and said gear and pinion are both suitably mounted in a rigid frame P, secured to a wall of the room or to some other support, as desired. The shaft of the gear L is adapted to be operatively connected with any suitable source of power.
The operation of my device is as follows:
lVhen in'the position shown in the drawing,
the frame and fans have been raised clear of the table or counter, and the parts are so held by the cord-O, which is attached to peg E by means of the ring E. Power being applied by hand to the cord F, the screen-frame and attached fans are oscillated over the table or counter.
If it is desired to operate the fans by mechanical power, the hook K may be passed through K, and a suitable spring, weight, or other known motor being connected with the shaft of gear L the fan may be run for any desired time by such means.
After using the device as a fan in the manner described and it being desired to use it as a screen the parts J and A are first disconnected. The fans 0 O O are then detached from the lower edges of the frame, the ring E removed from the peg F, and the screenframe then drops bygravity upon the table or counter and incloses the articles thereon to be protected from flies or vermin.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of an inolosing screen,
and a fan detachably hinged thereto, of flexifor raising and lowering the screen and fan, and operating devices for the latter, substantially as described.
2. A combined screen and fan, comprising the frame, the fans detachabl y secured to said frame, flexible suspensory devices for the frame and fan, raising and lowering means, and operating mechanism to cause an oscillatory motion of the frame and fan, substantially as described.
3. In a combined screen and fan, the screen frame, the fan detachably secured below the same, flexible suspensory devices therefor, a
1 lever pivoted to a fixed point, means for de- 1 tachably connecting said lever with the frame,
gearing adapted to be operated from a suitable source of power, and connections between said lever and said gearing, whereby power is transmitted to the frame and fan at suitable times, substantially as and for the 20 purpose set forth.
JOHN H. BEDINGFIELD.
