Description

. Patente .Furie I0, 1924..
Application filed July 28, 1922. Serial No. 578,054.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEWIS FRITZ, a citizen ofthe United States, and a'resident-of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cradles, of which the following is `a specification.
.My invention relates to new and useful improvements in Cradles, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which'will be highly vetlicient in use and economicalin. manufacture.
Among the salient objects of the invention is to provide a motion which will be automatically imparted through the medium of -an electricmotor or spring motor and which can be adjusted to regulate the speed of the rocking motion of the same.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
rIhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the -accompanying drawings, forming a part-of this specification, and in which, v
Fig. 1, isa side elevational view of'a cradle, embodying the invention, and
Fig. 2,- is a sectional detail view of the same ,taken substantially on line 2 2 O f Fig.' 1. l.
-In carrying'the objects of the invention into effect, I provide oppositely disposed hollow standards 5 and 6 mounted in spaced re' lation with respect/to each other and held in such relation by tie members 7, as illustrated, one of said standards being provided with an enlarged housing 8 at its ower extremit the purpose of which will be more ful y hereinafter understood. At the outer extremities of thestandards 5 and 6 .are lateral projecting supporting studs 9 carrying link members 10 through the medium of ball and socket joints 11. The link members .10 carry the crib or basket 12 and are vsecured to lateral projections 13 carried by the crib or basket 12, as illustrated.
The means for imparting rocking motion to the crib'12 comprises a rocker arm 14 having one end-fixed to a lateral projecting stud 15 through the medium of a bolt 16 and having its other end connected to a gear 17 through'` the medium of a bolt 18. The gear 17 1s confined in the housing 8 and meshes with a gear 190i' considerably smaller -diameter carried on the shaft 20 of a motor 21 also coniined in the housing 8. In 'this instance the mot-or 21 represents an electric driven motor, however, the driving means can be a spring-driven niotor or the like acl cording to the desire. wall portion 22 of the housing 8 removable to gain access to the interior of the housing 8, said wall portion 22 being secured in place by any suitable means. When the motor is in operation a 'rocking motion is imparted to the crib through the. rocker arm 14, which is. driven by the gears 17 and 19.
In order to regulate the rocking motion of the crib 12, I provide a number of holes 23 in the gear 17 into which the bolt 18 is adapt- I prefer to makethe ed tobe screw-threaded, each of said openings 23 being a greater distance from the cenwhen the rocker arm 14 is mounted inthe ter of the gear than the other andas such 75.
position of the openings 23 a greater or less rocking motion will be imparted to the crib 12, as will be readily understood. I v
I also provide a canopy 24 over the crib 12 which comprises a suitable frame 25 carrying mosquito netting 26, or the like, as a roof havingportions of mosquito nettin depending from the outer side edges o? the frame as indicated at 25, 4said frame 25 comprises parts hingedly connectedtogether by means of a transverse pintle 27 carried by adjustable supports 27, said parts being held in the positionillustrated in Fig. 2 by suitable Y v arms 26', carried by the supports 27. The adjustable supports 27 are mounted in the upper portions of the hollow standards 5 and 6, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and are held in the desired adjustable position through the medium of thumb bolts 28.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will be noted .that I associate with the crib 12 a pendulum 12, the purpose of which is such that when desired-the link member 14 can be detached from connection with the member 15 and oscillatory movement can be man' ually imparted to the crib, the pendulum serving to keep the crib in oscillatory movement a greater length of time. It is primarily my object to provide au automatically rocked baby crib whereby the .attendant need pay butlittle attention to the occupant of the crib and'thereby be able to attend to other domesticl duties or the like.. The construction of the crib is of a simple lis pended claim.
nature and the cost of manufacture will be repaid by the convenience adorded during the use of the cribo While ll have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention'into effect, this is capable or variation and modication Without departing from the spirit of the invention. ll, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the jprecisel details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself ot such variations and inodi cations as come Within the scope oit the apll-laving described my invention, What li claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
A cradle comprising supports in spaced relation with respect to each other; lateral studs atthe upper extremities oit said suports; a crib; means for supporting said crib y said supports for oscillatory movement9 Menores 'means arranged in said housing for oscillating said crib, said means comprising a motor,
a gear on the shaft of said motor; and a gear meshlng with sald rst named gear; `and an arm having one end fixed to said lateral projections at the end of said crib and the other end adjustably connected to said second named gear.
lln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this speciication in the presence or a subscribing Witness` l EWlS FRITZ.
