Beitknown that we, ALBERT A. SELDEN and WILLIAM G. DUOKETT, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fans; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andhto letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in au tomatic fans; and the object is to construct a fan to be used in dining-rooms, bed-rooms, or any place where persons desire to work, read, sleep, or anything, especially in hot weather, without being annoyed by flies, mosquitoes, or other insects, while at the same time being kept cool and comfortable.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of, our automatic fan. Fig. 2 is a view of the case with the fan for application to a. student-lamp or bed.
In the drawings, A represents a suitable clock-work, of any desired size and strength, by which the fan is to be operated. This clockwork may be driven bya spring,weigh t, or other power, and is preferably placed and secured in a casing, B. The casing may, if desired, be provided with a lug, O, as shown in Fig. 2, by which it can be attached to the standard D of a student-lamp; or it may have two lugs, b, (shown in dotted lines,) by which it may be secured to the head-board of a bed, the side of a wall, or any other suitable place. When used on the standard of a student-lamp the setscrew 0 holds it in any desired height. The
case may also be made very ornamental, and
can bemade of any material and strength to suit different circumstances.

any ordinary clock, gives motion to the intermediate gearing until it reaches the shaft e, which imparts motion to the automatic fan F.
The shaft 6 is provided with a crank,f, to
which the link or connecting-rod G is attached,
and it connects with an eye, 7, secured to the stem or handle H of the fan. The handle is provided with a small transverse shaft, h, journaled in a double bracket or standard, I, and at its lower end is secured a counterbalancewcight, i, which assists in helping or throwing the fan over the dead-centers as the fan oscil lates backward and forward.
The weight may be made adjustable, and can i be made lighter or heavier to suit circumstances.
The fanmay be made adjustable to move quicker or slower, as desired, and may be also ornamented and larger or smaller.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
