IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTNING-RODS.
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That IfCLAIiK JILLSOX, of the city and count of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Lightning-Rods or Conductors; end I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drewings, forming a part of this specification, in Which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of two sections of a rod made and connected according to my invention.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section of fig. 1; and
Figures 3 and 4 represent cross-sections on lines 1, 2, 3, and 4.
In the drawings, A represents an iron rod, which may be of any desired size and shape. The sections of the rod are grooved out and a strip of copper, B, forced into the groove in a very firm manner. Copper wire might be used, but I prefer strips, as shown in the drawings. The sections or pieces A are united by screr. eonnecting-piecesO, as shown in the drawings. Before both of the ends ot'the pieces, forming a joint, are inserted into the connecting-piece C a copper washer, a, is inserted, so us to occupy the position shown in figs. 2 and of the drawings, when the parts are screwed up into place. The connecting-piece C may be made with grooves or slots, 6, if preferred, to give greater conducting surface and a more direct connection of the copper conducting surfaces. It will be seen that my rod combines the advantages of both the copper and iron rods heretofore in use. Thecopper is eppiied in such a manner that it is not liable to be displaced, as would he the case if the coppefwaswound upon the outside of the iron rod. The copper washer b insures a good conducting connection between'the different sections or pieces of the rod.
