To all whom, t may concern,.-

Be it known that I, GRANVILLE W. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a toy which will serve as a source of amusement to children and at the same time per-- form the function of a spirometer to promote the chest development of the child or older person using the same.

To this end my invention consists in the toy constructed and operating as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts in both views, Figure 1 is a side view of a toy'embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof.

The numeral 1 designates the bed of the toy, which bed is of dish form with a flaring outer wall and is supported upon a series of feet 2. The bottom of said bed is depressed below its normal level to form one or more reservoirs, there being preferably two of such reservoirs 3 and 4, as herein shown, which are closed by a false bottom 5. Said bottom 5 is preferably of circular form with its central portion slightly elevated above the plane of its outer edge, as shown in Fig. 2. At its under side said bottom is provided with circular recesses G 7, which register with the reservoirs 3 et, and interposed packing-rings 8 render the connection between said bottom and the margins of the reservoirs both air and water tight. The false bottom is secured to the true bottom of the bed by means of screws 9, or in any convenient manner.

The outer portion of the bed 1 communicates with each of the reservoirs 3 4t by means of ducts 10, leading through the false bottom, at the inner ends of which ducts are checkvalves 12, which open inwardly to permit water to pass from the bed to the reservoirs. The reservoirs are also provided with outletpassages 13, leading from the bottom thereof upwardly within one of the side walls and through the false bottom, and with inlet-passages 14 for air, leading through the false terminating at theirouter end in a month-V piece 16. I have also shown the outletpassages 13 as being extended above the false bottom and fashioned to represent a hose-nozzle 17, and have shown two igures, representing firemen, each grasping one of said nozzles, which latter are represented as being connected to the hydrants, respectively, by a short length of pipe. At the center of the bed 1 is secured a vertical rod 18 to represent a flagstaff, to the upper end of which is secured a strip of sheet metal 19, shaped and ornamented to represent a flag waving from said staff. In practice I prefer to make the bed 1 and its reservoirs from a single piece of cast metal, as shown in Fig. 2, and also to make the false bottom 5 and the iigures representing the firemen, hydrants, and hose-nozzles from a single casting; but I do not restrict myself thereto. y

The toy thus constructed is adapted to be used-with air alone or with air and water combined, as follows: By placing one of the monthpieces 16 to the mouth and blowingV through its tube 15 a current of air through the corresponding reservoir and its outletpassage 13 will be created, and as the upper end of said passage is slightly inclined toward the rod 18a disk of paper or any light object loosely placed on said rod will be caused by said air-current to travel upwardly upon the rod to a height corresponding to the strength of the current and will rise and fall as the current is repeated intermittently. By the use of both of the mouthpieces by two persons it will be seen a contest can be had to determine which of the two is able to elevate the object to the higher point or to keep it elevated the longest'time, which is not only a source of amusement both to children and to older persons, but is also of great physical benefit in developing the chest. Even greater amusement can be after to nearly fill the reservoirs 3 4, the Valves 12 yielding to permit the same to pass through the ducts 10, and then blowing through the tubes 15, as before, thus causing streams of Water to rise through the outlet-passages 13 to a height corresponding to the strength of the currents of air created, the toy then presentin g the appearance of two firemen directing streams of water toward the top of the flagstaff. The water thus elevated falls back again into the bed and passes thence to the reservoirs, the raised central portion of the false bottom conducting it to the ducts 10.

By causing the air-inlet passages 14 to enter the reservoirs at the top of the latter and the water-outlet passages 13 to lead from said reservoirs at the bottom thereof I prevent any diffusion of the air-current and insure an unbroken outlet-stream so long as any Water remains in the reservoir.

It will be observed that each reservoir is entirely independent of the other, thus enabling any desired number of reservoirs to be employed within the scope of my invention. The ornamental figures upon the false bottom can be varied as may be desired.

Having thus fully described myinvention,

.what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters 1. A toy comprising a reservoir or chamber having an inlet-passage for air entering the same at or near the top thereof, an outletpassage leading therefrom at or near the bottom thereof and extending upwardly to a point above said reservoir or chamber, and means, as a vertically-disposed rod, for guiding an object elevated by a current of air or liquid issuing from said outlet-passage, substantially as described.

2. A toy comprising a bed containing a depressed reservoir or chamber and having communication therewith by means of a duct which is provided with a check-valve, said chamber or reservoir having an inlet-passage entering the same near the top thereof` and an outlet-passage leading therefrom at or near the bottom thereof and extending to a point above the bed, substantially as described.

3. A toy comprising a dish-shaped bed having in its bottom a depressi-on forming a reservoir and having a false bottom which covers said reservoir, said reservoir having communication with said bed by means of a duct leading through said false bottom at the inner end of which duct is located a check-valve, and having an air-inlet passage entering it at or near the top thereof and an outlet-passage leading from it at or near its bottom, which outlet-passage extends to a point above the bed, substantially as described.

4. A toy comprising a dish-shaped bed having a depressed reservoir With Which it communicates by means of a duct and checkvalve, said reservoir being provided With an inlet-passage for air entering the same at or near the top thereof and with an outlet-passage leading therefrom at or near the bottom thereof and communicating with a conduit projecting upwardly from said bed, substantially as described.

5. A toy comprising a bed having a raised outer Wall and having in its bottom a depressed reservoir which is tightly closed by a false bottom on said bed, said false bottom projecting to a greater height at the center of said bottom than at the edge thereof and containing, at its lower portion, a duct leading to the reservoir and a check-valve at the inner end of said duct, said reservoir being provided with an inlet-passage for air, which passage communicates with a conduit extending above said false bottom and adapted, at its outer end, to receive the end of a flexible tube, and with an outlet-passage leading therefrom at or near the bottom thereof, which passage also communicates with a conduit extending to a point above said false bottom, substantially as described.

6. A toy comprising the bed 1 containing the reservoirs 3 4 provided with the outletpassages 13, and having the false bottom 5, recessed at its under side as described and containing, in said recessed portions, the inlet-passages 14 and ducts 10, substantially as described.

7. A toy comprising the bed 1, reservoirs 3 4 having the outlet -passages 13 terminating in the upwardly-projecting conduits 17 and having the air-inlet passages 14, and the vertically-disposed rod 1S secured to said bed adjacent to said conduits 17, substantially as described.

8. A toy comprising the bed 1,v reservoirs 3 4 having the outlet -passages 13 terminating in upwardly-projecting conduits and inletpassages 14 terminating in upwardly-proj ecting conduits, and the flexible tubes l5 connected at one end to said last-mentioned conduits and carrying at their opposite end a mouthpiece, substantially as described.
