P. SEILEB..
SNUFP AND MATGH BOX. N0. 299,687.` PatentedJune 3, 1884.
@4MM y 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPP SEILER, OF CIEIICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM EISFELDT, OF SAME-PLACE.
SNUFF AND MATCH- BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,687, dated June 3, 1884.
Application med March 25, 1884. (No model.)
' .ject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snuff and Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to an improved device to be used .as a snuff-box, match-box, or for other like purposes.
The object of the invention is to construct a box or casing in which. the snuff or match receptacle will be inclosed and hid from view, the parts to be so constructed and arranged that upon pulling a cord the box will be opened and the snuff or match receptacle be drawn forward and the lid thereof raised; and
to the accomplishment of the above the in. vention consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, which will be described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawing, which represents a sectional view through the box.
A representsa box, of any suitable size or shape, the front end of which is closed by a piece, B, hinged to the bottom thereof. Front piece, B, is connected by an elastic cord, C, to the rear face of the box, said cord being secured to a lug, a, formed at a suitable point upon the inner face of said front piece.
In any suitable guides formed upon each inner side face of the box A a platform, D, is mounted and moves, there being a vertical partition, E, secured to the rear end thereof, said partition extending up to withina short distance of the top of the box A.
Secured to the rear end of platform D is a cord, F, which, after passing under said platform and over a roller, G, suitably mounted,-
is passed through an opening in the bottom of the box and to any convenient point from which it can be operated. Upon pulling cord F the platform D is drawn forward, and its front end, in pressing against the hinged front piece, opens the box and causes said parts to occupy the position shown in dotted lines. A cord, H, is also secured to the rear end of platform D and passed over pulleys I K, situated as shown, and to the free end of said cord a weight, L, is attached. The parts being in the position shown in dotted lines, and it being desired to close the box, the cord F is released and the weight L and elastic cord C, described as secured to front piece, B, carry the parts to their original position.
Mounted upon platform D is asnuff or match receptacle provided with a hinged lid, M, to which is secured an arm, b.
Attached to arm b is an elastic cord, N, which passes down through an opening formed in platform D, and is then carried back and secured to the rear wall of the box. By this arrangement it will be understood that when the platform D is drawn forward, as hereinbefore described, the lid M will be raised, a indicated in dotted lines.
The cord F may be carried to any point, so that any one, even-in the opposite end of a room from that in which the box is situated, may operate it.
The partition E may be ornainented in any suitable manner, and in place of the box O shown, any suitable figure may be employed.
lVhat I claim is- I 1. The box A, hinged front piece, B, and elastic cord C, in combination with platform D and cord F, secured thereto, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The box A, hingedfront piece, B, and elastic cord O, in combinati-on with weighted platform D and cord F, secured thereto, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The box A, hinged front piece, B, and elastic cord C, in combination with platform D, a match or snuff receptacle mounted thereon, and cord F, secured to said platform, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The box A, hinged front piece, B, and elastic cord C, in combination with platform D, match or snuff receptacle O, mounted thereon, a hinged lid secured to said receptacle, an elastic cord, N, for opening saidlid, and a cord, F, for operating the platform, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIPP SEILER.
