No. 6l6,639. Patented Dec. 27, I898. M. G. SHAIN.
BARBERS SHEARS.
(Application filed Nov. 15, 1897.)

Ilnrrn MILO G. SIIAIN, OF LOHRVILLE, IOIVA.
BARBERS SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,639, dated December 27, 1898.
Application filed November 15, 1897. Serial No. 658,656. (No model.)
To to whom, it Ina/y concern:
Be it known that I, MILO G. SHAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lohrville, in the county of Calhoun and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbers Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to prevent the annoyances incident to the scattering and spreading of hair, dandruff, 850., upon the face, neck, and garments of a person while his hair is being cut by a barber with shears and also to protect the operator from the single hairs and small particles that frequently fly upward and float in the air and come in contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth of the operator and the person whom he is trimming with the shears.
My invention consists in providing a shearblade with a flange or shield at its inside flat face and along its back edge, as hereinafterset forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved shears in position in the hands of a person, as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of one of the blades, and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the two blades cut off from the handles.
The letters A and B designate the blades of shears provided with handles and finger-holds and pivoted together in a common manner. The blade A has formed integral therewith or fixed thereto at its back and along its length and inside face to project toward the mating blade B a flange O in such a manner that as the cutting edges of the two blades are made to cross each other along theirlengths by the pressure of their handles in the operators hand the hair and particles cut off will be arrested in upward and separating movements by the downward motion of the blade A and flange, shield, or guard O and kept together and started downward as required to drop out of the way. Small particles of hair, dandruff,
or dust that may be set in motion by the operation of the shears or the joint action of the shears and a comb will be arrested and retained within the elongated chamber produced by the blade A and flange O by the atmospheric pressure by which particles are made to lodge and adhere to solid substances.
The gathering of minute particles that are liable to float in the air and to afiect the eyes and nostrils and respiration of persons may be facilitated by oiling the under or inside surface of the flange C, so that they can be readily removed in an adhesive mass by simply wiping them oif with a cloth or piece of paper.
It is obvious that cuttings impelled by the advancing edge of the overlapping blades will be intercepted and arrest-ed by the flange or shield and not projected to float in the air and to affect the respiration and eyes of the operator and his customers.
I am aware that a flange has been fixed to the outside face and edge of the blade of a shears to catch matter that may drop from the cut ting edges of the shears when in use for cutting hair; but in no instance has a flange been fixed on the inside face and edge of a shearblade to project over the cutting edge of the mating blade, so that when hair is out by the coaction of the blades the flange will arrest the upward motion of particles of hair and direct them downward as required to prevent such particles flying about in the atmosphere and in the faces of persons and affording protection, as contemplated by my invention.
Having thus described my invention and its functions and manner of operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent therefor, is
1. A barbers shears having a flange on the inside face and back edge of one of the two mating blades projecting laterally over the mating blade to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
2. An improved shears for barbers use consisting of two mating blades having handles and pivotally connected in the manner of shears and one of said blades provided with a flange at its back projecting laterally over the mating blade and away from the head of a person whenin use, as shown and described for the purposes stated.
MILO G. SIIAIN.
