Patented Dec. l3, I898.
A. H. SMITH. SASH FASTENER.
(Application filed July 20, 1898.)
(N6 Model.)
INI/ N709 ATTORNEY! v WITNESSES NlTED; STATES PATENT union.
AMOS HENRY SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK T. VAN I-IOSEN, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,7 58, dated December 13, 1898.
Application filed July 20, 1898. Serial No. 686,413. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMOS HENRY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to looks for window sashes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed to lock the sashes in a closed position and which is also adapted to clamp the sashes together, so as to prevent the rattling thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanylug drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of the lower part of the upper sash and the upper part of the lower sash of a window and showing my improved sash-lock connected therewith, part of the construction being broken away; Fig. 2, a back view thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan view.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 the lower part of the upper sash and at 6 the upper part of the lower sash, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device for the purpose hereinspecified which consists of two parts, one of which is secured to the lower part of the upper sash and the other to the upper art of the lower sash.
.That part of the device which is secured to the lower part of the upper sash consists of a plate 7, provided with a vertical keeper 8, which is preferably yoke-shaped in form and which is provided at its'front edge, at one side of said keeper, with a vertical flange or plate 9, the upper end of which is preferably terminated on a line with the top of said keeper.
That part of the device which is secured to the lower sash consists of a plate 10, which is provided adjacent to its rear edge with standards 11, between which is pivoted an automatic lever 12, the upper end of which projects backwardly and upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, and said lever is provided below its pivotal point at 13 with a downwardly-directed extension 14, on which is formed a backwardly-directed arm 15, which is preferably elliptical in form, the upper and lower sides thereof being convex, and said backwardlydirected arm 15 of the lever 12 .is adapted to enter the keeper 8, which is open at the front to receive it.
Pivotally connected with the lower end of the downwardly-directed extension 14: of the lever 12, as shown at 16, is a forwardly-directed arm 17, which is provided at its under side with a downwardly-directed shoulder or projection 18, and pivotally connected with said arm 17 at 19 is a dog 20, which is provided with a downwardly-directed finger 21, whereby a shoulder or projection 22 is formed, and the plate 10 is provided at its front edge with an upwardly-directed flange 22, which is formed thereon or secured thereto.
The outer end of the arm 17 is forked, as shown at 23 in Fig. 3, and the dog 20 is pivoted therein, and at the rear edge of the plate.
10 is an upwardly-directed arm 24, having a downwardly and backwardly directed extension 25, whereby an open spring-loop is formed and the downwardly-directed extension 25 of the spring-arm 15 is adapted to engage with the upwardly-directed flange 9 on the plate 7, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to clamp the sashes together.
The operation will be readily understood from'the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the following statement thereof. When the sashes are locked together, the parts of the sash-lock are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and in this position the arm 15 of the lever'12 projects into the keeper 8 and the upper sash cannot be lowered nor the lower sash raised. In this position of the parts the downwardly-directed shoulder or projection 18 of the arm 17 abuts against the inner face or side of the flange 12 at the front edge of the plate 10, and in order to unlock the device the front end of the arm 17 must be raised, and this may be done by hand or in any desired manner. Then the front end of the arm 17 is raised, it may be turned backwardly, and this operation will also turn the lever 12 backwardly and release the arm 15 thereof from the keeperS, and the upper sash may be lowered or the lower sash raised, as will be readily understood. \Vhen the upper sash is in the closed position and the lower sash raised, if the lower sash be lowered the parts of the lock, acting under the influence of gravity, will assume the position shown in Fig. I automatically, and at the same time the downwardly-directed extension 25 of the arm 24; will engage with the flange 9 and clamp the sashes together. In order to hold the parts of the lock in an unlocked position, so that the lower sash may be raised or the upper sash lowered, as desired, the forward end of the arm 15 is raised till the finger 21 on the dog 20 swings backwardly and strikes the flange 22, at which time the shoulder or projection 22 will rest on said flange and hold the forward end of the arm 17 in a raised position.
My improved sash-lock is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
IIaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Theherein-described sash-lock,comprising a keeper secured to the lower part of the upper sash, a plate secured to the upper part of the lower sash and provided with vertical standards, a lever pivoted between said standards and projecting backwardly and upwardly, and the lower end of which is provided with a backwardly-directed arm which is adapted to enter said keeper, an arm pivotally connected with the lower end of said lever and projecting forwardly, and a flange or projection on said plate in connection with which said arm operates, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described sash-lock provided with a keeper secured to the lower part of the upper sash, a plate secured to the upper part of the lower sash and provided with vertical standards, aleverpivoted between said standards and projecting backwardly and upwardly, and'the lower end of which is provided with a backwardly directed arm which is adapted to enter said keeper, an arm pivotally connected with the lower end of said lever and projecting forwardly, and provided near its forward end with a pivoted dog and with a downwardly-directed shoulder or projection, and the plate which is secured to the lower sash being provided at its forward edge with an upwardly-directed flange, substan tially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described sash-lock provided with a keeper secured to the lower part of the upper sash, a plate secured to the upper part of the lower sash and provided with vertical standards, alever pivoted between said standards and projecting backwardly and upwardly, and the lower end of which is provided with a backwardly-directed arm which is adapted to enter said keeper, an arm pivotally connected with the lower end of said 10 ver and projecting forwardly, and provided near its forward end with a pivoted dog and with a downwardly-directed shoulder or projection, and the plate which is secured to the lower sash being provided at its forward edge with an upwardly-directed flange, and said keeperand said plate being provided one with a vertical flange and the other with an arm which is adapted to engage therewith for clamping the sashes together, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of July, 1898.
AMOS HENRY SMITH.
