Description

@eine te'tr atnt @ffice mrsovsn rAeeoT ron'I antiwar)v mms.'
' @te dgehule referat tu in tlpgetetter @tient mit making putt nf tige same.
To ALL WHoM iT MAY coNcnRN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. POTTER, of Wyandotte, in theY county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Rail Pile; and `I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use thc same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a transverse section of my improvedpile or fa-ggot, onehalf the actual size.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same, illustrating a manner of applying old railroad hars in place of the inner or intermediate iron bars of the pile.
Figure 3 represents a trahsversel section of the 'complete rail, full size.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The subject ot' this inventionis a peculiar arrangement of iron bars, in connection With-a steel head of T form, the bottom of which steel head will be protected from undueheatiug, and the Whole being adapted to be e'ectually welded together in the operation of rolling. I
In iig. 1, a pile is shown, composed of three at iron bars,b, of equal dimensions, (seven by one anda quarter inches,) placed one on the top of. the other, and 'four narrower bars, a, two 'and a halt` by one inch, placedr on thetop bar b, the outer edges ofthe bars a being placed ush with the outer edges of the bars so that a space will be allowed between them to receive 'the lower part cvof a T-'shaped steel bar; c e', said part c beingtwol inches square in its transverse section, and the upper part c seven inches in width and one and three-quarters inch in thickness, the part c extending the whole Width of the pile. This' pile, when rolled, will produce a rail as shown in iig. 3, A being the steel head and B the iron neck and base. By this means it will be seen-that n the steel will be brought to awelding heat, and fully protected by the.v iron, asthe steelwill Weld at a much lower heat than the iron, and the two metals will,V during the process of rolling, be perfectly welded together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A pile or faggot for r'ailroad bars, constituted of iron and steel bars, arranged Asubstantially as herein represented and described.
To the above specification of my improved rail pile I have signed my hand ths`8th of November, 1855.
SAMUEL L. POTTER.
