SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,766, dated November 22, 1898. Application filed June 11, 1898. Serial No. 683,241. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND E. SAFFORD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have made certain new and usefullrnprovements in In valid- Rests, of which the following is a description sufficiently full,clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bed, showing my improved rest in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, the bed being shown in sections; Fig. 3, a side elevation illustrating a modification, and Fig. 4 a top plan view of the seat with the back removed.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates especially to a rest or support for invalids, whereby when bed-ridden they may be supported in various reclining positions as desired, the object being particularly to provide an adjustable back and head support connected to the seat which can be easily disposed beneath the patient and is readily removed from the bed.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by those conversant with such matters from the following explanation.

In the drawings, A represents a bed, and B the mattress, of ordinary form and arrangement. The rest comprises an approximately circular or oval-shaped seat 0, as desired, which may be upholstered at b. This seat is constructed with the usual yoke frame-bar f. The back D is formed in similar manner, the ends of its frame-bar f being hinged at g to the ends of the seat-frame. The lower ends of the back-frame are beveled or chamfered at h. The seat is extended rearwardly beyond the ends of the bar f, as shown at i in Fig. 4:. This extension projects beyond the normal or vertical plane of the back D.

Centrally on the top rail 7c of the backframe (see Fig. 2) there is a metallic loop or eye m. Bolted and in corresponding position on the bottom rail 10 there is a similar loop p. Through these loops a fiat wooden stop-bar is fitted to slide longitudinally, the lower end being disposed in position to engage the seat extension 2 and its upper end being secured against movement in the upper loop 10 by a set-screw t. In use by turning of said screw and freeing the rod q said rod can be adjusted in the loops or straps to gage the pitch of the back at any desired angle in relation to the seat. The seat is disposed in the mattress B and the patient is seated thereon, while the back can be adjusted to suit. Pressure from the back of the patient against the seat-back is resisted by the stop-bar Q en gaging the extension i on the seat in a manner which will be understood by those conversant with such matters without a more explicit description.

I also provide a head-rest H, which has a short shank v, that may be inserted in the loop to and held by the set-screw t conjointly with the rod g. This vhead-rest is readily detachable.

It will be seen that by my particular arrangement of parts an exceedingly cheap and practical. device for this purpose may be supplied, the adjustment being so simple as to be easily accomplished by unskilled persons. The hinges are so arranged that the back may be folded onto the seat and the appa ratus stored in a comparatively small space.

The dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicate the back adjusted at an angle to the seat, and it will be understood that any angle between the vertical and horizontal can be attained.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination of a seat, a back hinged thereto, guide-loops on said back, a slide-rod movable in said loops, and engaging at its lower end said seat, for regulating the adj ustment of said back, a head-rest adjustable in the upper guide-loop, and a device in said upper guide-loop operating to clamp said slide-rod and head-rest simultaneously.
