SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,485, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed January 23, 1897- Serlal No. 620,363. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY GRAHAM MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lanterns and has more particular relation to railway-lanterns.
This invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a lantern embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central verti cal section through the same; and Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section through one of the chimneys, showing the lateral projections.
1 in the drawings represents the lantern proper, 2 the lower movable chimney, and 3 the upper movable chimney. The lamp 1 comprises a suitable base 4, having a fount 5 and a chimney-receiving recess 6, located about said fount. The side walls of said recess 6 are provided with bayonet-slots 7, in which lateral projections 8, formed upon the chimney 2, are adapted to slide, whereby said chimney may be elevated and locked in this position or lowered at will. The chimney 3 is located in an annular recess 9 of a receiving cylinder 10 of the lamp-globe 11. The side walls of the said recess 9 are provided with bayonet-slots 12, similar to the slots '7, for.
receiving projections 13, formed upon the chimney-ring, similar to the projections 8. The lower chimney 2 is preferably constructed of red glass, while the upper chimney 3 is constructed of green glass.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that when it is desired to show a red light the chimney 2 is raised by means of the projections 8 protruding through the bayonet-slots 7, said projections beinggiven a partial revolution, thus turning them into the tops of the bayonet-slots and holding the chimney in its elevated position. Should a green light be desired, the projections 13 of the chimney 3 are disengaged from the liori- &
zontal portions of the bayonet-slots and the chimney lowered into the globe 11. The lower end of said chimney 3 is provided with an annular flange 14;which prevents the chimney from being smoked when not in use by closing the opening to the recess 9. The top of the lamp-cylinder 10 is preferably provided with a bail 15, whereby the lantern may be carried about from place to place. The lamp proper, including its globe and fount, may be constructed in any desirable manner, as this portion of the device forms no part of the present invention.
By my improved construction either white, green, red, or any other desirable colors may be alternately displayed by the same lantern by simply adjusting the chimneys up or down, as before described.
It will further be observed that when either one or the other of the chimneys 2 or 3 is raised or lowered the same is brought into the same horizontal plane with the flame of the lantern and the light from said flame is thus caused to shine through the colored glass of said chimney before escaping from the globe 11.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination with the base having a fount and a surrounding wall forming a chimney-receiving recess, a globe supported on said wall a lamp-hood supported above the globe, and two concentric cylinders mounted upon'said hood, of a ring mounted to slide in the space between the fount and its surrounding wall and carrying a chimney, a chimney mounted to slide between the upper cylinders with its ends held in rings sleeved upon the inner cylinder, an annular flange on the lower end of the upper chimney and adapted to engage the lower end of the inner cylinder and to close the opening to the space between the two upper cylinders to prevent smoking of the chimney when not in use, and means for holding the chimneys in their adjusted positions, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
v HENRYv GRAHAM MILLS.
