UNITED STATES PATENT FEICE.
HILAND FLOW'ERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,096, dated November 15, 1898.
Application filed J' une 2 8, 18 9 '7.
To LZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HILAND FLOWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters, of which the follow ing is a full and complete specication, such aswill enable those skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to roller-casters for furniture-such as bureaus, beds, tables, and heavy articles of this class-and which may also be used in connection with pianos and other heavy musical instruments.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a partin which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference, said drawing being a side View of the improved roller-caster, the upper part thereof being partly in section to show the construction.
Referring to the drawing, 5 represents a suitable support for an article of furniture and is provided with a vertical socket in which is arranged the tubular casing 6, having a iiange or rim 7, which is adapted to bear against the under side of the support 5 and to be secured thereto by suitable screws 8. An angular shaft 9 is sleeved within the tubular casing 6, which is interiorly arranged to conform with the shape of the said shaft. The lower end of said shaft is provided with a circular disk 10, upon the periphery of which is provided a downwardly-extending flange 18. The under surface of said disk is provided with an annular semispherical groove adapted to form a roller-bearing. The shaft 9 is centrally grooved to provide a seat for the round bolt 11a, which is preferably threaded at either end.
The roller 13 is mounted, as usual, between the arms of the yoke 12, which are curved upwardly andl forwardly and terminating in a suitable head 1l.
of this head and formed integral therewith is Upon the upper surface Serial No. 642,761. (No model.)
Y a circular disk 10, which is adapted to be seated within the annular flange 18 of the upper disk 10. An annular groove is provided upon the upper face of the lower disk 10, which coincides with the similar groove upon. the under face of the upper groove 10, thusl completing the roller-bearing.
The lower disk 10 and the head 11 are pro vided with a vertical groove which is in alinement with and communicates with the groove in the shaft 9. The bolt 11a extends both through the groove in the shaft 9 and also in the groove which extends through the lower disk l0a and the head 11, and upon the projecting upper and lower ends of said bolt are provided tightening-nuts, by which the parts are rigidly held in operative position.
Having fully described my invention, I .claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a caster, the combination with a casing rigidly secured to an article and'provided with an angular socket, of an angular shaft removably seated in said socket and provided with a longitudinal opening therethrough, a disk integral with the lower end of said shaft and provided with a downwardly-extending annular flange, a lower disk arranged within said iiange of the upper disk and provided with a vertical opening communicating with the opening in said shaft, ball-bearings arranged between said disks, anda yoke extending below said disk, a roller j ournaled in said yoke, and a bolt sleeved within the said openings in the shaft and disks Vand adapted to be secured thereto, so as to hold the oper*- ating parts securely in position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 1st day of March7 1897.
