REVOLVING TABLE TOP.
No. 271,054. Patented Jan.Z3,1 883.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR:
ATTORNEY N. r-rzn, mmumogn nm WlillingMlL ma UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY G. FOWLER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
REVOLVING TABLE-TOP.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,054, dated January .23. 1883,
Application filed July 6, 1881. (No model.) 7'
.and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that willenableothersskilledin the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawin gs, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in self-waiting tables, and has for its object to provide a comparativelyinexpensive table of this character, in which a yoke or bail handle is pivoted to the pivot-pin on which the rotary top piece of the table revolves, said handle being adapted tobe turned down into a recess in the said top piece, flush with the upper side theieof, so as to present no projecting part.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawiugs, in which Figurelrepresents a vertical cross-section. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the lower sectionv or base. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the handle.
Similar letters of. reference indicate 'correspondiug parts.
The letter A designates the base-piece; B, the top piece; 0, the pivot; D, the handle, and E the recess in the top piece for receiving the handle. Both the base-piece A and top piece, B, are preferably made of circular form, and the top piece is adapted to revolve upon the base-piece by means of balls or rollers f, running in grooves 9, Fig. 2, formed in both pieces, one opposite to and coincident with the other. The top piece, B, is provided with a rim, B, to prevent dishes or other articles from fallingoff ofit, the rim being formed by sinking the top piece within the rim, as shown, and, if desired, saidtop piece. may be molded of papier-mach, so that it will rapidly absorb moisture. The pivot 0 extends through the top piece, B, into the base-piece A, to which it is secured by means of a screw-thread, and the pivot is provided with a washer or head, h, which is sunken into the top piece in a line with the handle-recess E. The handle D is yoke-shaped, and is arranged to swing on the pivot (J at its upper end, while the recess E is formed on one side of the pivot, iu the upper surface of the top piece, of suitable size to receive the handle when it is swung to a lower position.
It will be seen that the handle D is a medium for carrying the entire top from one place to another, while by extending the pivot (J through the top piece into the base-piece and connecting the handle to such pivot both pieces A B are practically sustained, thearrangenient of the handle to swinginto the recess E, moreover, leaving the top piece perfectly flat, which obviously facilitates transportation.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to combine a revolving top piece with a stationary base-piece having balls for supporting the top piece; and I am also aware thatitis common to arrange the handles of chests, drawers, 820., to swing into recesses, and I do not claim such as my invention.
WhatI do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a self-waiting table, the combination of the grooved base-piece, the rotary grooved top piece, provided at its center with the recess E, the balls arranged in the grooves of the said pieces, the pivot-pin 0, attached to the basepiece, and having a fixed head resting in the recess of the rotary top piece, and a pivoted handle adapted to turn into the recess in the top piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoiugI have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of July, 1881.
