Description
M. P. SGHLAMBS. Piano-Stool.
No. 215,400. I Patented May 13,1879.
NE PETERS. PHDTKLLITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATHIES P. SOHAMBS, OF MANSFIELD OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIANO-STOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,400. dated May 13, 1879; application filed December 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIEs P. SCHAMBS, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Piano- Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improvement in piano-stools or chairs; and consists in the means hereinafter described for preventing the lateral movement of the seat thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the seat of the pianostool may be raised or lowered, which will prevent all lateral movement of the seat, and at the same time add to the beauty of the stool.
Figure 1 is a side view of a piano-stool containing an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the hanger D, with the base A of the stool removed.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the base of the stool, which, in the present instance, is of metal, and consists of the legs a. and cylindrical body b, the latter being supplied at its vertical center with the internallythreaded aperture cl. 7 t
B indicates the seat, which may be of any suitable construction, and is centrally provided upon its under surface with amale screw, e, the head of which may be secured in a of the arms f extend downward and inward,
and hold the sleeve i, which encircles the lower end of the screw 6. The screw 6 is of a diameter to snugly enter the aperture (1, while the sleeve t is large enough to closely fit over the cylindrical body of the base A. The low er part of this body may be ornamented as desired; but its upper portion must be plain, (or it may be fluted or grooved) in order that the movement of the sleeve 43 over its superficies may be smooth and free.
The operation of the deviceis plain. The seat may be raised or lowered in the usual way by working it either to the left or right. While the seat is being elevated, the screw ascends in the aperture d, and the sleeve thas a similar movement upon the outside of the body I). The sleeve t passing over a large surface of and snugly fitting the body b, prevents, in connection with the screw 0, any lateral movement of the seat.
It is obvious that the arms f could be worked into some ornamental form and in crease the elegance of construction of the stool.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjustable stool or chair, in which the seat carries the screw which enters the base, and also a frame which envelopes the body of the base and moves with the screw and seat, substantially as set forth.
2. The seat B, having screw 6 and hanger D, consisting of the arms f and sleeve i, in combination with the base A, having cylindrical portion I), with threaded aperture d, substantially as set forth.
i 'In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in piano-stools as above described I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of December, 1878.
MATHIES P. SGHAMBS.
