No. 6I3,482. Patented Nov. I, I898. G. J. WINKLER.
LAMP CHIMNEY.
(Application filed May 11, 1897. Renewed July 19, 1898.)
(No Modl.)
IN VE N TOR THE NORRIS vzrzasvcov. nnm'aurgwu WASHINGTON. 0 cv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE JOHN WINKLER, OF DUNELLEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO PAUL REUSCH, OF SAME PLACE, AND EDWARD CONRAD REUSOH, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
LAM P-CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,482, dated November 1, 1898. Application filed May 11, 1897. Renewed July 19, 1898. Serial No. 686,374. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE JOHN Win];- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunellen, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimneys, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lighting devices for use in connection with lamp-chimneys; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which a lighted match may be applied to the wick of the lamp without removing the chimney.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side View of a lamp-chimney provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a
section thereof on the line 2 2.
In the drawings forming part of this speci fication I have shown at 5 a lamp-chimney which is provided at the lower end thereof with a reduced cylindrical extension 6 of the 0 usual form, and in the practice of my invention I form in one side of said reduced cylindrical extension 6 of the chimney 5 an opening 7, and I secure to or form on the sides of the extension 6 a plate 8, which is provided with a corresponding opening 9, or said plate 8 may consist simply of a shoulder or projection formed on said extension 6 and provided with a fiat outer surface, and pivotally connected with the flat outer surface of the part 8, below the opening formed therein, as shown at 10, is a triangular plate 11, which is adapted to cover the openings 7 and 9 and in one side of which is formed a circular notch or recess-12.
The fiat outer surface of the part 8 is provided near the upper side thereof with an angular arm 13, between which and the part 8 the plate 11 is adapted to move, and secured to or formed on the part 8 in the lower lefthand corner thereof is a pin 14, which is adapted to limit the downward movement of the plate 11 to the left, and secured to or formed on the part 8, near the right-hand side thereof, is a pin or projection 15, which is adapted to limit the movement of said plate to the right.
When the plate 11 is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, a lighted match may be inserted through the openings 7 and 9 for the purpose of lighting the lamp, and the said openings 7 and 9 may be closed, so as to cut off the draft therethrough when the lamp is in use, by turning said plate to the right, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1-.
The angular arm 13 operates by friction to hold the plate 11 in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and this device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and does not add materially to the cost of the chimney.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A lamp-chimney, the base of which is provided with a flattened raised portion in which is formed a central opening, said chimney being also provided with an opening which corresponds therewith, and a plate which is pivotally connected with said flattened raised portion, and which is adapted to close said opening, and means for limiting the movement of said plate, and for securing the same in position to close said opening, substantially as shown and described.
2. A lamp-chimney, the base of which is provided with a flat and raised portion in which is formed a central opening, said chimney being also provided with an opening which corresponds therewith and a plate which is pivotally connected with said flat and raised portion and. which is adapted to close said opening and means for limiting the movement of said plate, and means for securing the same in position to close said opening, consisting of a spring-arm adapted to oper= ate by friction on the said plate, substan= tially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of May, A. D. 1897.
I GEORGE JOHN WINKLER.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM G. DEMEZA, C. W, SINEs.
