LAMP-CHIMNEY.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. HUSE, of Winchester,county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Chimneys, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object to construct a chimney, especially designed for gas-burners, which will be strong and durable and will not be inj uriously affected, cracked,or broken by heat, said chimney being particularly adapted for use 011 Welsbach burners, wherein a considerable amount of heat is generated.

In accordance with this invention the chimney is composed, essentially, of a number of transparent panels or sections, preferably of mica, united at their side edges to form a transparent cylindrical or tubular body portion, uniting-strips, preferably of metal, be-

- ing employed for the purpose of thus uniting said side edges of the panels or sections. To the lower end of the transparent cylindrical body portion is secured a metallic ferrule, and said ferrule is adapted to be placed upon or attached to the burner in any usual or suitable manner.

As a means for conveniently and securely attaching the ferrule to the lower end of said cylindrical body portion the upper end of said ferrule is formed or provided with an inturned lip or fiange which is folded back against the interior of the ferrule, and said inturned lip or flange is formed or provided with a number of ears or projections which are turned upwardly, some or all of which being formed or provided with holes or eyes, there being a single hole or eye in each car so provided, and the uniting-strips for the panels or sections of said cylindrical body portion extend or project a short distance beyond the lower end of the body portion, and the said projecting ends of the uniting-strips are passed through the holes or eyes in the ears or projections provided at the upper end of the ferrule and are then turned back upon themselves to thereby securely connect the ferrule with the transparent body portion. The upper edge of the cylindrical body portion is reinforced and protected by means of a ferrule, preferably of metal, formed U- shaped in cross-section, which is slid onto and thereby caused to embrace said upper edge-and which is punched or indented at intervals in order that it may firmly engage the upper ends of the uniting-strips to be thereby secured in position.

In the drawings I have shown three sections or panels a a (1, preferably of mica, and said panels are herein shown as formed into a cylinder, the side edges of the panels being secured together by means of uniting-strips Z) I) b. The uniting strips 1) are formed S- shaped in cross-section, (see Fig. 4,) and the side edges of the panels a, are inserted in the loops or bends of said strips and the latter cramped or pinched together and caused to firmly engage and clamp the side edges of the sections, thereby uniting them.

To the lower end of the body portion is secured a metallic ferrule c, which is adapted to be applied to or secured to aburner in any usual or suitable manner, and as a means for securing said ferrule and body portion together I have herein shown said ferrule as formed at its upper end with an inturned edge c,which is formed or provided with upturned ears or projections 0 upon which the lower end of the cylindrical body portion rests. The cars or projections c are herein shown as formed with holes or eyes 0 through which the lower projecting ends b of the uniting-strips b are passed, and said ends 5 after having been passed through the eyes 0 are doubled or bent back upon themselves, thereby securing the ferrule firmly in position upon the lower end of the cylindrical body portion. The lower ends of the unitingstrips are extended to project below the body portion for the purpose of thus attaching said body portion to the ferrule. The upper edge of the transparent cylindrical body portion is reinforced and protected by means of a ferrule e, preferably of metal, formed U- shaped in crosssection,which is slid onto and thereby caused to embrace said upper edge, and is thereafter punched or indented at intervals, as at 6, so as to firmly engage the upper ends of the uniting-strips to thereby secure it in position at the upper end of the body portion.

A chimney constructed in accordance with this invention is strong and durable, and moreover practically indestructible by heat, and is therefore particularly adapted for use on burners where intense heatis generatedas, for instance, on Velsbach incandescent lights or burners.

I claim 1. A chimney consisting of a body portion comprising a number of transparent panels united by strips to form a cylinder, and a ferrule at the lower end of said body portion having its upper end turned inward and formed with internal upwardly-projecting ears upon which said body portion rests and to which the lower ends of said uniting-strips are attached to thereby attach the cylinder to the ferrule, substantially as described.

2. A chimney composed of a cylindrical body portion comprising a number of transparent panels united by strips, the lower ends of which project beyond the lower edge of the body portion, and a ferrule at the lower end of said body portion formed at its upper end with an inturned edge having upturned perforated ears upon which the body portion rests, and to which the projecting ends of the uniting-strips are attached, substantially as described.
