LAMP-CHIMNEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
I Application filed December 2, 1913. Serial No. 804,303.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THADDEUS B. DIL- LARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sylva, in the county of Jackson and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimchimney to be securely and instantly fas-.
tened to the burner by a simple turn of the chimney in one direction and to be as readily released from the fingers of the burner by turning the chimney in the reverse direction, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawirig:-Figure 1 is an elevation of a chimney constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in place in a lamp barrier, the gallery of the latter being partly shown in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, on the plane indicated b the line aa of Fig. 1, .the chimney being shown in locked position in full lines and in disengaged position in dotted lines.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a lamp chimney 1 Which'may be otherwise of any suitable shape and construction, and which may be of any suitable size, with looking lugs 2, at its base or lower end and which project outwardly therefrom. These locking lugs are substantially semi-crescent shape and are spaced slightly apart as at 3.
Each lug has its outer side 4-,, which forms a cam, curved from end to end arranged so that each lug widens outwardly from the chimney in one direction, from its front end 5 to its rear end or shoulder 6. Each lug is also wedge-shaped and is provided with an inclined upper surface 7 which rises from the front end 5 to the rear end 6, as shown. I
My im roved lamp chimney is especially adapted or use on burners of ordinary form such as indicated at A. in the drawings and which burners embody a gallery B and spaced upwardly extending .chimne r clamping spring fingers C which rise rom the outer edge of the gallery each of which has an outwardly extending bend D at its lower endimmediately above the gallery.
The lugs on my chimney correspond in number with the locking fingers of the burner and are spaced apart to match the fingers, so that when the chimney is placed on the gallery of the burner, the fingers pass through the spaces 3 between the ends of the lugs. By partially turning the chimney in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, the outer curved edges 4; of the lugs engage the inner sides of the bends D of the clamping fingers and the inclined cam surfaces 7 of the lugs also engage under the said bends, so that the spring fingers are caused to press inwardly on the locking lugs of the chimney and also downwardly thereon and, hence, the chimney is securely fastened on the burner.
W hen it is desired to release the chimney from theburner the chimney is turned in the reverse direction to the arrow in Fig. 2 a sufiicient distance to cause the lugs to disengage the bends of the clamp fingers and to cause the rear ends 6 of the lugs to bear against the clamping fingers when the chimney can then be freely elevated from the burner.
It will be understood from theforegoing description and by reference to the drawings that my improved chimney may be readily attached to and detached from a lamp burner by using only one hand to partly turn the chimney and place the same on or remove it from the burner and, hence, the chimney may be readily attached or detached at will.
I- claim A lam chimney having locking lugs on its outsi e at its base to engage in the bends of the spring clamping fingers of a lamp burner, the said lugs being spaced apart, curved from end to end and arranged so that each lug widens from end to end, said lugs also having upper inclined cam surfaces rising from their narrow front ends to their broadened rear ends for the purpose set forth.
. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
THADDEUS B. DILLARD. Witnesses:
A. J. DILLs, V. V. HooPER.
