WITNEEEEE.' INVENTDFE.'
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JENNIE L. BRIGGS, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOUQUET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 613,059, dated October 25, 1898.
Application iiled March 1,1898.
To afZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LJENNIE LAWToN BRIGGS, of Taunton, in the county ofvBristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bouquet-Holders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in devices for securing a flower, flowers, or buttonhole-bouquet to the dress of the wearer.
The object of the invention is to provide a pin or button with an ornamental receptacle for moisture-retaining material and a latched cover, whereby a flower or flowers may be ser cured to the clothes of the wearer and the flowers preserved.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bouquet-holder provided with a flower. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the holder. Fig. 4 is a front view of the holder with the door or front opened.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a case of any desired form having a recessed receptacle for a sponge, cotton, or other moisture-retaining material, openings for the stem of the flower, a front secured bya latch, and a button or pin, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, a indicates the back of a receptacle, shown in the drawings as of rectangular form, but which may be of any form desired; b b, the raised rims inclosing the sides of the receptacle c, in which a moistened sponge, cotton, moss, or other material adapted to retain moisture is placed; d, an opening for the insertion of the stems of ilowers. This opening d may be placed only on the upper rim Z7 or, and preferably is, placed on both the upper and lower rims b b, so that the stems may extend below the receptacle, or part of the flowers above and part below the holder when sprays of flowers are to be se- Serial No. 672,134. (No model.)
cured. e is afront plate secured by the hinges ff at one side of the receptacle and provided with the latch g, by which the front plate e is secured to the other side of the receptacle. The front plate may be formed of perforated ornamented work, as shown, or may be a solid plate. A button t' or a pin k is secured to the back a for fastening the device to any part of the wearing-apparel.
When used, the material in the receptacle c is moistened and the flower or llowers are placed on the surface of the moistened material and are secured by placing the front e over the stems and securing the front to the other side of the case by a spring or other similar latch.
The moisture of the material in the receptacle will maintain the flowers fresh for a long time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a bouquet or flower holder of the nature described, the combination with a flat back and raised rims provided with the opening for the reception of the stems and forining a receptacle for moisture-retaining Inaterial, of a front hinged on one side of the receptacle and secured by a latch to the opposite side; whereby the iiowers are secured and held in contact with the moist material while being worn, as described.
2. In a bouquet or ilower holder, the combination with the back a and the raised rim b provided with the opening d, forming a receptacle for a moisture-retaining material, of the hinged front e, the latch g, and a suitable device for securing the holder to the wearingapparel, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JENN IE L. BRIGGS.
