IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE WAGNER, of the city and county of Washington, and District of Columbia,

have invented a new and useful improved Boot and Shoe; and I do hereby declare -the following to be a full,4 clear, andexact speecetion of'the description of the nature thereof, sniicient to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

`making part of this specication, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side views of a shoe illustrating my invention.

Figure 3 is a back view thereofl l Figures 4 and 5 represent sections of` the parts o f the shoe comprising the uppers thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several'fgures.

This invention-relates to a novel mode of forminga boot or shoe, whereby a saving of leather is effected, a better `t obtained, and a neater shoe' produced with but two seams, and it consists in forming the front, two# thirds of one side, and the entire opposite side, in one piece of leather, and the other third of the side stated of another piece, as will be more `fully hereinafter described.v

C represents the remaining piece, which commences `at the middle of thelheel d, continues toward the front, and is secured to the frontpiece at its lowest forward end, as shown `-at e; this does not extend the full length of the piece, but is cut out so that the portion above the seam a will torm a tlap'or covering, D, for the open space formed'by the two endsof the pieces. It will be seen that the flap D not-only covers the opening, but forms means of attachment for securing the parts together when the shoe is placed on the foot. vThe ilap, however, may be cut with the frontpiece ifdesired, and thus cover the opening from the front to rear. In the present case, I employ hooks or catches and eyelets on the inner face of the flap, but other modes of securing may be'employed. It will be readily seen that a very superior nished shoe may be produced.v The absence of seams at the instep and on the sides from top to the bottom is a decided advantage; this is accomplished in my shoe Aby having a seam` at the middle of the back of the heel, and a short one Vat the side, just at placeswhere they will not rub and blister the feet, in the manner as has been described.

.Having thus described myinvention,lwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination of vthe piece atb-c, and the piece C, leaving the opening on the side covered by flap-Duin themanner described for the purpose specified.
