UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
ADELIA AMANDA GARDNER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
DRA'PERY-SU PPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,199, dated October 11, 1898.
Application filed Dece ber 4,1897. Serial No. 660,805- (No model.)
To ztZZ whom it map concern.
Be it known that I, ADELIA AMANDA GAR NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drapery- Supports, of which the following'is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to supports for window-curtains and other draperies, and has for its object the production of an article of the abovedescribed class that will be efficient as a drapery-support without the necessity for the use of pins, clasps, or other similar devices, which are apt to tear or m utilate the draperies.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a support which will maintain draperies in such a manner as will add materially to the artistic appearance of the same and permit such a draping of an ordinary curtain or portiere as will extend entirely across the window or door apertures.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View of a window or door frame with my improved drapery-support in the proper relation thereto, said support and said frame being shown partly in section. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view of the device adapted to retain my improved support in position.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings is shown at a the frame of a window or door the uprights of which are respectively provided with a plate I), rigidly attached thereto by any suitable means. This plate I) is provided with a circular flange (1,:
open atthe bottom and provided with a resilient flaring projection f on each side of opening in said circular flange.
The circular flanges d are adapted to receive the ends of the cylindrical pole g, which comprises two independent rods g 9 adapted to telescope one within the other by means of a hollow section in one of them, as 9 To maintain the rods g g in the proper relation, I
provide a plurality of spiral springs h h2 713, seated in the opening in the rod 9 and exerting a constant pressure upon the rod g thus holding the same in contact with the plate I). The number of these springs maybe increased or diminished, according to the desired length of the curtain-pole, each of said springs being provided with a head adapted to act against the inner end of the rod 9 and on the spring adjacent thereto. The rod g is tubular in form at its outer end and provided with a short bolt 7a, which is mounted therein and may be spring-operated, if desired, a spring being shown in Fig. 1, and said bolt is provided with a downwardly-directed pin, by which it may be operated, said pin being proj ected through a slot in the bottom of the auxiliary tubular pole m, hereinafter described.
Encompassing the pole g is an auxiliary tubular rod m, substantially crescent-shaped in cross-section and open at the bottom. This auxiliary rod is maintained in the proper re lation to said pole and to a window or door frame by means of the resilient projection f, attached to the plate h, which also supports said pole. The rod we may be ornamented to any desired extent and may be provided at the ends with metallic bands, if desired, to prevent an undue wear and resulting unsightliness by reason of its constant contact with the resilient projection which retains it in position.
The draperies are secured to my support, and said support is adjusted to the window or door frame in the following manner: A loop is formed in the upper end of the draperies sufficiently large to receive the pole g, and said loop is made permanent by tacking or stitching the lower end of the turned portion to the body of the same. The pole g is then inserted in the loop in said draperies, and
the curtain-pole, consisting of the rods 9 and g with the curtain or drapery thereon, is passed through the auxiliary pole m, the draperies or curtains passing through the slot in the bottom thereof from one extremity to the other, and said parts may then be connected with the end plates 12 in the usual or any desired manner. In this operation one of said plates is usually secured to the side of the window-frame, and the poles are placed in position therein, and the other plate is then connected with the free end of the poles, which are moved into position between the sides of the frame and the end plate then secured thereto.
As aforesaid, the construction of my improved support for draperies is such as will admit of the draping of the curtains or portieres from one side of the window-frame to the other, care being necessary, however, to have the lower portion of the draperies of sufficient dimension to pass between the projecting ends of the flanges d.
By the above-described means it will be readily observed that the objects of my invention are attained. Ihave produceda curtain pole which in appearance is artistic, which has no ungainliness, such as is occasioned by the necessity for the use of pins, and which will permit a draping of the curtain or portiere to the very door or window frame. I have also produced a support which can be readily mounted and taken down and which is simple inconstruction and arrangement of parts and inexpensive to manufacture.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A curtain support or holder comprising two telescopic rods, springs mounted in one of said rods and adapted to bear on the end of the other, one of said rods being also tubular in form at its other end and provided with a spring-operated bolt and side plates which are adapted to be secured to awindow-frame or other support and which are provided with circular flanges or holders adapted to receive the ends of said pole, said flanges or holders being open at their under side and provided with outwardly and upwardly curved arms, and an auxiliary pole which is tubular in form and provided with a longitudinal slot in the bottom thereof and through which the first-named pole or support is adapted to be inserted, said auxiliary pole being supported at its end by said outwardly and upwardly curved arms, substantially as described.
2. A support for window-curtains or other draperies, comprising two end plates which are adapted to be secured to the sides of a window-frame or other support, said plates being provided with circular flanges or holders which are open at their lower sides and provided with lateral projections, a tubular pole which is provided in its lower side with a longitudinal slot and the ends of which are adapted to be supported by said projections, and a curtain-pole consisting of two telescopic rods one of which is provided with springs which bear upon the end of the other, and the outer ends of said rods being adapted to enter the circularfianges or holder of the said plate, and the outer end of one of said rods being provided with a spring-operated bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of October, 1897.
ADELIA AMANDA GARDNER.
