FLOWER-POT DRAINER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,523, dated September 27, 1898.

Be it4 known that I, WILLIAM F. SPRINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edwardsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Flower-Pot Drainer, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in iower-pot drainers.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efiicient device adapted to be readily arranged within a iiower-pot over the opening in the bottom thereof and capable of insuring perfect and uniform drainage, and thereby facilitating the growing of plants.

g The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a detail perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with this invention. ,Fig 2 is a similar view showing the lower face thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the device applied to a iower-pot.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

l designates a disk or plate designed to ybe arranged withina flower-pot 2 over the opening in the bottom thereof to obstruct partially the passage of waterthrou gh the same, and the said plate or disk, which preferably has a convex upper face 3, is provided with inclined side edges 4, extending inward from the upper face 3 to the bottom of the disk or plate. The convex upper face 3 prevents any water from collecting upon the device and remaining within the flower-pot and the inclined sides 4: serve to reduce the area of the bottom or lower face of the disk or plate and bring the water closer to the opening 5 in the bottom of the pot. The disk or plate is provided at its upper face with an outwardly-proj ectin g peripheral iiange l, forming a continuance of the upper convex face 3; but a iiat-topped plate of circular or any other shape may be employed, if desired.

In practice the device is designed to be covered with coarse sand, which also fills the space between it and the sides of the iiowerpot, and in order to permit water to drain freely from the ii0wer-pot the device is provided at its side edges witha series of grooves or gutters 6, extending' from the upper face "3 of the disk or plate to the lower face thereof and gradually increasing in width toward the latter. The lower face of the disk or plate is provided with a central annular'recess 7, with which the grooves or gutters 6 communicate, and a depending stud 8 is arranged at the center of the annular recess 7 and is adapted to fit in the opening 5 of the vflower-pot to center the device on the bottom thereof, the stud only partially filling the opening to permit a free flow of the water in draining.

` The grooves or gutters 6, which are radially disposed, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2` of the accompanying drawings, form lugs or feet, and the alternate spaces between the radial grooves or gutters are provided with an outer series of short grooves 9 and an inner recess l0, which increase the drainage of the flower-pot. Y

The invention has the following advantages: The device is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, it requires no skill to arrange it within a `iiower-pot, and it will insure perfect and uniform drainage. Its convex upper face is adapted to shed water perfectly and prevent the same from accumulating upon the device and remaining in the iiowenpot, and the grooves or gutters permit the Water to iiow freely to the opening of the flower-pot.

Changes in the form, proportion, and minor v details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What I claim is 1. A device of the class described consisting of an imperforate disk provided at its lower face with a series of gutters, and having lugs or feet located between the gutters and adapted to rest upon the bottom of the iiower-pot, said feet or lugs being provided at their lower faces with a series of short grooves, substantially as described.

` 2. A device of the class described,consisting of an iniperforate'plate designedto rest upon the bottom of a flower-pot and cover the open ICO ing thereof and provided with a depending stud adapted to fit in the said opening and prevent the plate from becoming displaced, said plate being provided with passages extending to the stud,substantially as described.

3. A device of the class described consisting of an imperforate plate provided at its lower face with a depending stud and having a recess extending around the same, said plate being provided with a series of gutters or grooves extending from the said recess over the bottom and side faces, substantially as described.

4. A device of. the class described consisting of an imperforate disk having a convex upper face and provided with inclined side edges extending inward from the upper face to the lower face, said lower face having a central recess and provided with radial gutters or grooves, substantially as described.

5. Adeviceoftheclassdescribed,consisting of an imperforate disk or plate provided at its lower face with a central recess and having a 4 series of radial grooves or gutters, said plate being provided at intervals between the radial `grooves or gutters with an outer series vex upper face and inclined side edges and provided at its lower face with a central re.-

cess and with gutters or grooves extending radially from the saine, said'plate having a stud depending from the said recess and adapted to it in the opening in the bottom of a flower-pot, substantially as and for the purpose described.

7. A device of the class described consisting of an imperforate plate provided at its top with a projecting flange and having gutters or grooves extending inward from its side edges to the center of its lower face, substantially as described.
