ERNEST O. GBOTPETER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED CLOTHES-RACK, lRONlNG-BOARD SUPPORT, AND RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,476, dated September 27, 1898". Application filed January 31,1898. Serial No. 668,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST O. GROTPETER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, inthe State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Clothes-Rack, Ironing- Board Support, and Receptacle, of which the,
following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined article adapted for use to suspend clothes to be dried and to serve as an ironing-board support and a receptacle into which the clothes being ironed may fall and be protected from becoming soiled, as is the case where no receptacle is used to receive them while being ironed, and unless caught they fall into contact with the floor.
The device is so arranged as to be compactly folded for storage or setting aside, and
when folded is also capable of employment as a clothes-rack.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a top plan View of my improved device. Fig. II is an end View and illustrates in dotted lines the positions into which the parts move in theinitial act of folding the device. Fig. III is a front view of the device in folded position. Fig. IV is an end view of the device folded. J
1 designates the feetof the device, which are surmounted by standards 2, bearing longitudinal slats 3.
4 designates lower cross-bars, and 5 upper cross-bars, both of which are pivotally connected at points indicated by 6 to the standards 2.
'7 designates front uprights pivotally connected at point 8 to the cross-bars 4 and 5 and bearing longitudinal slats 9. Secured to the lower cross-bars 4 are a series of slats 10.
At each end of the device the space between the bars 4 and 5 is occupied by cords 11, that close said ends, and thus the interior space of the device between the slats 3 and 9 and the bottom slats 10 and between the ends thereof forms a receptacle into which the clothes may fall while ironing them, and the upper cross-bars 5 provide a rest for the ironing-board 12.
13 designates rack-bars pivoted at 14 to the lower ends ofthe front uprights '7, and the upper free ends of the bars 13 receive and are connected by a cross-bar 15. This crossbar 15 is adapted for the reception of clothes which may be hung thereon to dry or for convenience during the period of ironing may be placed thereon while other articles are being ironed.
WVhen the device is in use as an ironingb'oard support, the bars 13 are thrown into the position illustrated in Figs. I and II and rest upon stops 16, attached to the standards 2. These stops, as shown, are in the form of blocks and are adapted to be engaged by notches inthe bars 13; but itis evident that other forms of stops might be used, as a pin or stud would answer the purpose.
17 designates pins adapted to be inserted through openings 18 in the bars 13 and through openings 19. These pins are preferably connected to the bars 13 by cords 20,
that serve as retainers for the pins whenwithdrawn. It is evident, however, that other forms of fasteners may be employed such, for instance, as any suitable catch.
When the device is folded, the bars 13 are moved upwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. II, until they reach the position shown in Fig. IV, when the pins 17 are inserted in other openings in the bars 13 and in the front uprights in a similar manner to that described when the device is unfolded. 21 designates hooks secured in the standards 2, within which the ironing-board 12 may be slipped when the device is folded and rests upon the feet 1, thereby placing it in a convenient position and compactly against the folded device.
I claim as my invention- In an article of the character described, the combination of standards, slats on said standards, uprights, slats on said uprights, crossbars, pivotally connecting said standards and uprights, slats on the lower cross-bars, bars pivoted to said uprights and a bar connectin g the outer ends of said last-mentioned bars; substantially as described.
E. S. KNIGHT, N. V. ALEXANDER.
