DANA BIGKFORD, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 61,146, dated January 15, 1867. v
IMPROVED SPRINKLER FOR CLOTHES AND FLOWERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANA BIOKFORD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved-elastic Sprinkler for Clothes, Flowers, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
a The nature of my invention consists in an elastic bulb, arranged with a suction valve, and an exhaust, arranged with a cap or nozzle perforated with small holes, for sprinkling clothes before ironing, also for sprinkling flowers, plants, floors, 860. After pressing the air out of the bulb, and placing the suction valve under water,
the valve will open and allow the water to fill the. bulb. This water will remain there until, by a gentle pressure,
it can be forced out in small or large quantities, as desired. I construct these bulbs, A, of different sizes, of some elastic substance, such as rubber, arranged so as to force itself open, to create a vacuum, and allow the liquids or air to flow in through the suction valve B, and fill the vacuum formed by pressing the bulb together, and allowing it to spring itself open. Then, by pressing the bulb A, in the hand or otherwise, you can force the contents out through exhaust a in any quantity desired. The suction opening can be arranged witha filter, so as to thoroughly filter the water or other matter as it is driven in. In this'way you can draw liquids from one cask or barrel and force it into others, thoroughly filtered or strained. This is valuable as a cleanser of maple sap before boiling, in drawing it from the large holders and delivering it into the pans on the fire. This can be done constantly, so as not to slop the sap against the hot pan, as by dipping.- This can be made very valuable for a great many different purposes, such as washing the dirt, dust, insects, &c., fron1 the leaves of house-plants, by forcing the water with great pressure against them, &c.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is'- The combination-of the elastic bulb A, the valve B, the perforated nozzle 0, all constructed as and for the purposes specified.
DANA BIOKFORD.
