SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 644,971, dated March 6 1900. Application filed November 15, 1899. Serial No. 787 075. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. DULL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgewatergin the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprays; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my spray. Fig. 2 is a detail View showing a second method of attaching "the flexible discharge-tube. Fig. 3 is a central Vertical section of the spray. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the cup D.
The invention relates to hand-sprays for watering small plants, poisoning insects, whitewashing, and other purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the tank or vessel in which the spray liquid is placed through a funnel B at the top, this funnel having a stop-valve O in its neck to prevent air from getting in or out when the vessel is in use. The tank is in this manner made air-tight in its upper portion. At the central portion of the bottom of the tank is secured a shallow cup or cylinder I), in which closely fits and against which bears the lower end of a removable air-pu mp E, the upper end thereof having a valve is arranged in the bottom of said pump to allow air to pass therethrough and into the liquid contents of the tank through perforations in the side walls of the cup, while preventing the said contents from escaping into the pum p.
G indicates a discharge-tube, which is also arranged at the lower end of the tank, projecting from its side wall, and is adapted to receive a flexible hose H, carrying a spraynozzle having a cut-off valve.
K represents the handle of the can or tank, and L the handle of the piston-rod of the airp mp- When it is desired to use the spray, the vessel is charged with the liquid until it is nearly full. Then the air-pump is worked until'sufficient air is condensed in theupper portion of the vessel to serve for the discharge of its contents. The vessel is then carried where needed and its contents discharged through the hose and nozzle in such-manner as may be required for the purposes in view.
One charge of air should be suffic-ieut to discharge the contents of the vessel; but'if it should fail toward the end the pump can be operated to increase the quantity of air above the liquid.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-- The hand-spray, consisting of the portable tank or vessel,the removable air-pump located in said vessel, the inclosing perforated or slotted lateral and end bearing cup for the lower end of said pump secured to the bottom of said tank, the removable connection of the upper portion of said pump with the top of said tank, the outlet-valve in the bottom of said pump, and the flexible discharge-tube connected to said tank, substantially as specifled.
