FIRE KINDLER. (Applicati lllllllllllllllll 7.)

' awvemto'c 'NITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
SAMUEL L. BLIGH, OF OUSTARDS, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,232, dated September 27, 1898. Application filed September 1897. Serial No; 652,993. (No model.)
I citizen of the United States, residing at Oustards, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description ofthe same, ref erence being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device adapted to be placed in a heating or cooking stove or a grate and supplied with oil which is vaporized and burns in the stove or grate for the purpose of igniting and kindlinga fire therein when used with the ordinary fuel or used as a heating medium in place ofthe ordinary fuel.
The invention consists in a device of the above character constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my in1- proved device; Fig. 2, a horizontal section thereof; Fig. 3, a detail cross-section taken through the oil-chamber.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the cross-head having the extension F, which is cast or otherwise formed therewith, said cross-head having a chamber B for the oil, which is closely and tightly packed with particles of metal of uniform size, as shown at C or metal filings 0r pebbles may be used or other suitable matter which has a tendency, to disintegrate and subdivide the volume of oil which enters the chamber. The oil-chamber after being properly packed with the fill ing, as above described, the open ends of the chamber are closed by means of screw-plugs a, which engage interior screw-threads in the ends of the chamber.
A supply-pipe D, leading from a suitable The pipe D, which connects in any suitable manner with an elevated tank or receptacle, as hereinbefore described, is protected by an outer pipe E, which surrounds the same, with its end fitting over andaround the neck I) of the extension F.
Holes 0 are formed in any part of the crosshead A, their location being governed by the use to which the device is to be applied, said holes communicating with the interior of the oil-chamber B and having pins 01 embedded in the filling C, with their ends projecting out through the holes a short distance. The pins prevent the openings from being interfered with by the ashes in the stove or grate when used as a kindler; also, whenthe pins are heated they assist in forming the gas, the gas after being generated passing out through the holes and guided upward by the pins.
The supply of oil to the chamber is regulated in 13116111511311 manner either by a stopcock or other well-known means.
The device may be changed in form as found desirable without departing from the, spirit of the invention.
, Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fire-kindler, a cross-head having a longitndinal chamber 13 provided with openings 0 through its top; the plugs a for closing the ends of the chamber, a filling placed in the chamber to receive oil, an extension F projecting at an angle from the cross-head and provided at its end with an opening, and the supply-pipe which is inserted in the opening in' the extension, combined with an outer pipe E which protects the supply-pipe, and pins d which project from the openings 0 in the crosshead, and which have their inner ends embedded in the filling in the chamber, substantially as shown and described.
- In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL'L'BLIGH. Witnesses:
OTTO A. Sronz, JAMES G. Fosrnn.
