TO ALLwHoM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, JOSEPH J. STOUT, of Grccnsburg, in the county of Decatur, and State of Indiana, have invented a new'and useful improvement in Evaporators for reducing the juice-of sorghum; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line a: x, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a similar section on the line 3 3 fig. 1; and
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal central section.
In the different figures the same letters refer to identical parts.
A is the pan of the evaporator, which I make of a curved form, as shown. It is closed at the ends and divided by longitudinal partitions into several compartments. In the drawings I show four on each side of the upper and central one. In the middle of the evaporator, and immediately over the fire, I constructia compartment of about double the width of the others. The bottom of this I form in corrugations, so as to increase the fire surface. This effect may be produced also by forming it with lozenge form elevations, orby any other means, so as to produce the same result. The longitudinal partitions A are inclined, as shown, so that the syrup, as it passes from one to the other, shall be gradually cooled by being less exposed to the direct action of the fire. In the bottom of the side compartments I also form a longitudinal gutter or corrugation, for the same purpose-as above stated. In these gutters, commencing at the central compartment on each side, I make openings through the inclined partition, at alternate ends of each, so that the juice, first placed in the central compartment, flows successively through the entire length of each. The vent bars E are attached to guides, K, on the ends of the pan, and are carried over its upper surface; through these, set-screws, I, pass, attached to the valves or plugs D, which close the openings O/through the partitions. These bars are united by a rod, F, running longitudinally across the pan, and controlled by a screw turned by the crank G. By this means the valves may he slid over the holes as much as may be desired. The fire is built upon the grate-bars at the front of the furnace, marked B. These grate-bars are not extended to the outside of the pan A, but are closed by the inclined grated shields B B, so as to prevent the wood getting under the outside partitions. H is the furnace door. By this means the juice first exposed to the hottest of the fire is gradually, as it thickens, cooled, flowing towards the outside partitions, from which it is drawn off.
Having fully explained the construction and operation of my improved evaporatoywhat I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Constructing the pan of an evaporator with inclined longitudinal partitions forming compartments, arranged one higher than the other, and with alternately disposed openings, so that the juice shall fiow from the central and highest part through the length of all the partitions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim the rod F and bars E E, in combination with the set-screws I and valves D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Constructing the bottoms of evaporators with corrugations or other irregularities of surface, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. r
4. I claim the arrangement of the grate-bars B and grated guards B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. r
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH J. STOUT.
