CLEVIS FOR FLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,968, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed April 11, 1898. Serial No. 677,202. (No model.)
To a, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises for Plows 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,'
clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clevises for plows; and its object is to provide means for shifting the center of draft for the purpose of regulating the Width of the furrow.
The invention itself consists in the novelty of construction of the clevis and its combination with the appliances now in use, which will be more specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is now had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of my invention attached to an ordinary horizontal clevis such as now used. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Referring now to theillustrations, in which like parts are designated by similar letters of reference, A represents the device itself, composed of an ordinary flat piece of iron or other suitable material, the clevis part of which is made to firmly embrace the usual horizontal clevis B in the front of the plow by being doubled around the same, making forked arms A and A after the manner of an ordinary clevis, and secured to the horizontal clevis B by means of a pin D passing through the open ings in both, as shown. The device A is so constructed that it is wider than an ordinary clevis, and a rounded portion thereof, a, extends diagonally forward from the clevis part, beyond the arms engaging the horizontal clevis, and has in its center an opening 6, in which may be inserted another clevis or hook connecting with the whiffietrees. In the arms of the clevis A are circular openings K K, corresponding with the openings F F in the horizontal clevis. The clevis A can be adjusted at any point of the horizontal clevis by sliding it along thereon or by turning it over in case an extension to the right is desired and is secured to the same by passing the pin 1) through these openings.
. G represents a section of the ordinary plowbeam, to which the iron braces E and E constituting the head of the beam, are secured by means of the bolts H and H This iron head has the usual vertical extension and the openings I I, in which the pin O of the horizontal clevis is inserted.
It will be seen that my invention renders the connection between the plow and the whifiietree more firm and stable than the ordinary coupling by means of clevises in the old way and at the same time permits sufficient freedom of vertical movement. The principal object obtained, however, is the lateral extension afforded the horizontal clevis without rendering it bungling and cumbrous.
I do not limit myself to the exact description herein set forth, but claim, broadly, as my invention any device of similar construction and having a like object.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clevis capable of adjustment to the horizontal clevis of a plow by means of forked arms embracing said clevis and capable of being secured thereto by pins passing through openings in said arms and said horizontal clevis, another portion of the said clevis extending diagonally forward from said arms and having an opening therein for the insertion of a hook or other clevis connecting with thewhiffletrees, substantially as described.
2. A clevis A, having forked arms, A and A adjustable to the horizontal clevis on the front of a plow, said arms having openings corresponding to said openings in said horizontal clevis, a pin, D, adapted to secure said clevis, A, to said horizontal clevis by insertion in said openings, a rounded portion, a, of said clevis, A, extending diagonally forward from said arms and having an opening, I), therein for the insertion of a hook or other clevis, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two wit nesses.
CHARLES A. JOHNSON.
