Description

uitrit faire ntrntl fifiif,
vSOLMN OPP-ENHEIMER, O F PERU, INDIANA.
Letters .Patent No. 61,090, dated January 8, 1867. l
IMPROVEMENT. IN CONSTRUGTING LATGH-BOLTS.
fitte .rlgetule referral: in in tten ettm @anni mating part v11i tte slams.
TO ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SoLoMoN OPPnNHEIMnR,'of the town of Peru, Miami county, Indiana, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing the LatchBolts in Door-Locks, and in a manner so as the' lock can be used and applied to either a right or left door; and I hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
I construct my reversibley latch-bolt in two. separate parts, one part consisting of the foi-kil on which the i tumbler works, andthe other part is the shank with the bolt-head to it.
Figures 2, 3, and 4,'show different kinds of Shanks having my improvement, which consistsl in ailixing flanges to their sides, ns seen at aa on those figures, andalso small projections on beads, b b, the use and application of, which will be' explained hereafter.
To the forked part of the latch-bolt, iig. 1, isitted a pair of additional prongs, A A, which are far enough apartfmm each other so as to admit the width of the shank between them. Upon the forward 'ends of these prongs aro'plaeed upright iianges, cc, which form a kind of clamps to hold the shank, when placed between them, firm and steady, and prevent it from side-play. By means of these raised flanges being before, and the connecting-ridge B, (iig. 1,) being behind, a recess isI formed as seen at dd, suitable for the shank'to lit into; this is for to hold the parts together when in use. But the ridge B, (fig. 1,) is not necessary for either pushing or drawing the shank when the lock is in action, because thereare other and additional means provided, namely,
those beads or projections on the sides of the shanks marked with lctters'b en gs. 2 and 4, and which fit into corresponding grooves on the inside of the clamps, as seen ing. 1. The round nose D, on fig. 3, and .the groo'vcd one E, iig. l2-,.are two different kinds'oi` guides running in suitable grooves and ridges in the lock-plates. It will be seen by the description given and by examining the drawings, that when the latch-bolt is tobe reversed from a right to a 1eft,vor from left to a right-handed lock, it is only necessary to lift thc shank out oi' the clamps and 'return it again with any side turned up, and this can' be done without trouble or interference with the other parts of the locks, for there is no screw, pin, or slide to be drawn as in some otherkind of locks.
` I do not make any claim asto constructing a door-lock Where the latch-bolt is made in two or more parte, for I know that is nothing new, being done on many locks in use.
Ent what I claim as my invention, land for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
The peculiar manner and means by which the twd several parts are connected and held together, namely:
The additional prongs A Aand the raised danges c c on the same, forming clamps for holding the shank irm and steady. l i
v I also claim aiixing side-flanges a a', and beads or projections b b, to the shank for the purpose as stated; also the grooves in the clamps for the said beads or projections to it in to. v
