Letters Patent No. 61,087, dated January 8, 1867.
RETURN GRACE-HOOP.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be' it known that I, FRANCES MUNSOX,-0i Cincinnati, Hamilton connty,-State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Return Grace-Hoop; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of the specification.
This invention consists in attaching one end of each of two or more elasticcords to an ordinary grace-hoop, and the other ends of said cords being secured to the hfih'dlcs of the sticks, ciiuses the hoop to return tb the sticks from which it has been projected by the operator, thus enabling one person tolen joy a game which heretoforecould not be entered into unless two players were present at the same time. i
In the accompanying drawing, which is a perspectireview of a grace-hoop embodying my invention, A represents the hoop, which may be constructed pt; any suitable material and dimensions, and B Care two elastic thongs'br cords, one end of each being attached to said hoop. The elastic cord B is attached to the hoop by being passed through an aperture, b, in it and then tieil'fas't, whilst the other cord, C, is attached to a staple, c, which is secured to the hoop, and either of these modes of fastening may be employed, as both have been found to be equally effective. The free end of the cord B is provided with a ring, 6', into which one finger of the player is to be inserted, or, if preferred, that endfof the cord B may terminate with an elastic noose to slip over the hand of the player and encircle the wrist. D and E are the sticks, and theelastic c'or d C is represented as passing through'a ringer ferrule, e, on the end of stick E, and being secured near the handle of the latterby a small pin. The cord may occupy a small groove in the side of the stick, or the entire stick may be tubular, and the cord may pass through it and out atthe end. This hoop is played with in the same'manner as the ordinary gracc-hoop, except that-the sticks are never crossed, and only one person participates in the game,'and as soon as the hoop is projected from the sticks theresilicnt action of the elastic thongs B and C causes it to return directly to the sticks and thus one person can enjoy this most delightful andinvigorating game for an indefinite length of time. I have described my invention in its preferred form, but it is evident that a greaternumber of cords might be employed for the purpose of retracting the hoop, although a greater number would add to the complexity of the parts, and increase the chance of entangling the sticks and cords. I
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- The combination of the grace-hoop A, with the elastic thongs B C, for the purpose herein described and set forth.
1 In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
FRANCIS .MUNSON.
