Be itkno'wn that I, WILLIAM C. McGILL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Instrument for .Cutting- Wires, Drawing Corks, tc.; and I hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciication.

My invention consists, rst, in an arrangement whereby the functions of a cork-extractor, a Wire-cutter, and a can-opener, are combined in a single instrument; and secondly, in certain improvements in the details of such an instrument.

Figure 3 shows its adaptation to can-opening.

A helve or handle, A, is armed at one end with a lance-like blade, B, adapted to pierce the thin sheet metal of which sardine er other cans are composed. Iivoted to the blade B is a fulcrum or shearing-bar, C, which, being' double, embraces the blade. This bar terminates at one end in a cross-bar or foot, D, for resting upon the can in thc act of ripping open the same; the other portion coacting shearwise with the blade B to cut open the can, (see tig, 3.) A notch, E, is provided in the edge of the bar C, which being engaged under the wire of a champagne or mineral-Water bottle, holds the same, and enables said wire to be sheared et? or severed between the blade B and the bar C, (see g. 2.) Projecting rectangularly fromthe handle A, at itsmid-length, is a lefthand screw-threaded shank, F, which terminates in a right-hand cork-screw, G. Tapped to fit the screw-threaded shank F, is a nut, II, from which proceeds a circular rest or foot, I, adapted to bear upon the neck of the bottle, so that after the cork-screw has fully penetrated the cork, the continued rotation of the handle A operates to draw the cork, (see iig. I.)

I claim herein as new, and of my invention- I. As a new article of manufacture, I claim the parts A, B, C, l), E, and G, constituting an instrument for drawing corks, cutting wire, and opening cans.

3. The can-opening instrument, consisting of the handle A, blade B, shearing-bar C, and foot D.. .arranged and operating as set forth.
